The home of the Suns is getting a new name in the fall. Wonder who will step up.

US Airways' 10-year contract, which began in 2005 after the merger of America West Airlines and US Airways, runs through Oct. 2015 but the airlines say the Phoenix Suns, who manage the arena, have the option to seek a new sponsor before then.

American, which merged with Tempe-based US Airways in December, said it is relinquishing its renewal rights because the US Airways name will be phased out as soon as the airlines fully combine their operations, and American already has its name on two NBA arenas. There's the American Airlines Center in Dallas, home to the Dallas Mavericks, and American Airlines Arena in Miami, where the Miami Heat play.

"Three branded arenas in one major sports league is not the best use of our marketing resources,'' company officials said in an employee newsletter due out today.

I wondered when this was going to happen.

I like the arena name when it was called America West Arena. It had a nice ring to it. When it was changed to US Airways Arena, it didn't have a nice ring to it.

I hope they get someone in there that doesn't make the name of the arena even worse then it is now.

I'm thinking Tohono O'odham Arena.

I kind of get the feeling that the various rival gaming tribes will try to start this type of one upmanship as the naming rights come up around town. Don't you?

And honestly, I kind of like it. Much more character than a stupid bland corporate name.

There are complaints that people won't know how to say "Gila."

I still can't believe people still don't know how to say it. Gila - Geela and another one is Ocotillo. People still say it with the Ls.

I absolutely do. Just watching the chess match behind the campaign season was fascinating.

Love the Telsa option. Or we can suck up to Elon Musk to get that Tesla station here in other ways!!!

Solar City Arena.

SpaceX Arena.

Maybe the town of Gilbert, AZ can pool it resources and call it the Gilbert Arena, and then the Suns can sign Gilbert Arenas to play in the Gilbert Arena.

Given the connection between GCU and Colangelo/Suns, and as a counter to the other local diploma mill:

Grand Canyon Univ Arena

But in fairness, everyone pronounces "Los Angeles" as if it were English.

Hoping for: Freeport McMoRan Copper Coliseum.

That would gives us a local sponsor, it would tie into our copper mining heritage, tie into Suns heritage (the name of their old building being the coliseum) and have a nice alliteration to it.

Though I don't think it will actually happen since mining companies aren't exactly consumer facing. Sponsorship deals make more sense for companies with a product to sell to the average joe.

It was actually US Airways Center or USAC.
