I don't like that the "intentional spike" isn't considered intentional grounding. Thats exactly what it is.

Make the QB take the snap and throw it out of bounds 10 feet over a receivers head if you have to. Its a cheap play that has been accepted as part of the game.

That's an interesting and valid point, but there are numerous epic plays which defined the NFL that are predicated on that spike. Not necessarily the last play--although there have been many--but the play before or the play before that. The problem with just dropping back and tossing it out of bounds is that, according to your own criteria (and league rules frankly), the QB would have to leave the pocket to do so, and too much time would run out, thus ending the game.

There's a reason the World Cup took off here this year--the games are 90 minutes of nonstop action. 90 freaking minutes.

The NFL has to do something to shorten the games while still exhibiting the same level of excitement and professionalism. Eliminating the extra point would do that but extending it does nothing to add excitement while possibly even lengthening the game.

I don't even mind if they move the extra point back but to eliminate it is eliminating a part of the history of the game.

How about making the blocked extra point a live ball?

There was a time when the conversion (now called an extra point) was actually worth more points than moving the ball across the goal line. I think the history of the game will do nicely even if they do away with the point after.

Uh, 90 minutes of action and for the most part no scoring. It did not take off this year, it was simply the media having a agenda to promote it with nothing else going on. More power to those who enjoy soccer, but it still a minority sport in the United States compared to something like football and American football needs no help since it has ruled the sport scene in the States for a considerable period of time. That is the point, the NFL does not need any rule changes to thrive which would alter the tradition and history :)

Thanks for the insight dude. Football > Soccer. Got it.

Football is a regional sport, internationally speaking. Soccer is global. We live in a different world now. Increase your perspective dude. Or continue living in 1980, doesn't matter to me.

Adapt or die. The world cup destroyed most American sports ratings, including the world series and the NBA finals. Saying it was a media agenda is a joke. People watched. In numbers. The NFL needs to adapt for the future.

The hypocrisy is that people want to keep extra points to ensure the integrity of the game, but they have no problem with the new NFL in terms of passing and the rules helping the offense. If you wanted to really get real they'd run on every play and dude's on offense would play defense too, like in the old days when players went both ways. That's not today's NFL.

It's an ignorant argument made by people who are small minded.

Just because the rest of the world is stuck with a boring sport and they have been the ones slow to adapt to anything new does not mean we have to regress to be part of something which never excited this nation with good reason in comparison to something like American football. That is like saying one must force themselves to listen to Euro electronic dance music because the rest of the world adores its monotonous expression. When there is a professional soccer league in The United States which becomes popular on par with professional football and basketball, let me know but till then the aspects of soccer seem boring to Americans and that is the point of the conversation and using soccer as a basis to change a sport which is far more popular to Americans makes no sense when American football is thriving :)

(IMO)

As a "live" sport, top level soccer is every bit as exciting (or boring) as North American football. However, America's modified version of rugby is by far the best TV spectacle. The networks are masters at filling in all of the "dead" time in a relatively slow, deliberate sport.

(The best live team sport is ice hockey.)

The only part that is filled in is the actual television part called breaks for advertising which have nothing to do with the game. My point is simple, it has nothing to do with liking soccer or not and especially does not need soccer to adjust an opinion... the game of American football is vibrant as is and far from being on life support, it has no need to change. Even lets say one thinks soccer is a great sport, it has its tradition for its own success and football surely has its and I could be wrong but I do not think soccer is making vast rule changes at the same pace the NFL is starting to contemplate

The fill is the analysis and replay after replay of an event that lasted about 5 seconds as we wait for a half minute or more for the next play. They are very good at doing that and it's very much part of the overall enjoyable experience.

Most of the significant changes in football are safety related and are necessary because American style football survives as long as the mother's of America approve, not fathers. ;)

Bite me. Two words you should never say while playing soccer, apparently. Oh, and the biter then flopped and whined about his sore teeth.

I agree with you rugby is entertaining...soccer not so much!

What other sport in the world can you watch for 2 hours, yet nobody has scored even a point (on a pretty regular basis)? IMO that's not very entertaining.

In the same way that Americans have a basic understanding of the intricacies of their favourite sport, others appreciate the nuances of soccer and for them 0-0 is not boring in the slightest. True baseball fans enjoy the strategies in 1-0 shutout as do hockey fans. When your raised with it, you have a more complete view. I was in Sochi and thoroughly enjoyed the smothering defensive play by the Canadian hockey team, others found it boring.

I guess to each their own & respect you're like for the sport.

So if you had 1 choice & both ur fav teams were playing at the same time, which would you choose? Cards or your soccer team?:D
