Magic trade Drew Gooden

By Tim Povtak | Sentinel Staff Writer

The Orlando Magic have agreed to trade power forward Drew Gooden, Steven Hunter and the rights to second-round draft pick Anderson Varejao of Brazil to the Cleveland Cavaliers for center/forward Tony Battie.

Hunter, a free agent, had to be signed to a new contract before the deal becomes official later today.

Battie, 6-11, 240, averaged 5.6 points and 4.9 rebounds last season, playing in both Boston and Cleveland.

Gooden averaged 11.6 points and 6.5 rebounds last season, his first full year in Orlando.

Cavs are making themselves over big time since losing Carlos Boozer (2 trades this week)

I dont think Gooden will produce Boozers number but will be a good replacement

I know some of the people on this board wanted Steven Hunter but I guess we have to cross him off now

Cavs will probably miss Battie's defense but it seems like they got the better end of the deal

Wow, that's a pretty good price for Battie. I don't think the Suns could have competed with that even had they wanted to.

Maybe Cavs will want to move Hunter?

I'm guessing the Cavs will focus on moving Diop (rhymes with "flop"), although they may just be preparing for next year when Zydrunas Ilgauskas comes off contract.

I think Gooden could evolve into a good player. His stats are better than his reputation: 11.6 ppg, 44.5% shooting, 6.5 rpg in 27.0 minutes per game. His problem was that he played the same position as Juwan Howard and did not really do well at SF. He was facing a tough situation since the Magic drafted Dwight Howard who is their PF of the future, so this trade is a wonderful opportunity for Gooden.

if i am the cavs i really like this deal. gooden can rebound and move around the floor, hunter can run the floor at center and rebound. when you top this off with the add of snow, luke jackson and lebron and i think you have a good young line up for the east.

paxson has dealt with the boozer lose very well if this deal goes down.

I agree. Assuming this deal goes through, Paxson is up for "come back GM of the year" :D

Drew Gooden has to be thanking his lucky stars here. How many places are there in the league where an undersized PF can fit in nicely and play big minutes? And playing with LeBron is the gravy.

The Cavs might have 'downgraded' from 2nd-round-pick Boozer to #4-overall-in-the-same-draft Gooden, but they landed on their feet nicely. With this trade and the Snow trade, they're starting to look like a playoff team again.

I wonder why the Magic included Varejao? Is John Weisbrod not happy unless he's getting worked over in every deal? :p

I'm guessing Orlando wanted Battie a lot. Battie can play both center and PF, so he gives them a lot more flexibility than with Gooden who is a one position player. Battie is very good on defense and is effective even when playing short minutes off the bench. But I would not be shocked if Battie ended up starting at center with Cato at PF. With Turkoglu at SF, this is a team that might actually be able to play defense.

None the less, I think this is a huge improvement for the Cavs. Gooden will give them a lot of points (more than Battie would) with solid rebounding.

Wow, the Magic are going to have 5 new starters next year. That's a pretty dramatic overhaul.

It's more dramatic than that. If you take their roster of a year ago, all that is left is Grant Hill (who didn't play), DeClercq and Brogans. Stevenson was added in mid season and Garrity seems unlikely to return.

If the Cavaliers are serious about wanting to move Diop, the Suns should be listening. He has been terrible on offense so far and commits too many fouls, but he's not that far from being able to help the Suns, and he's still only 22 years old.

hmm, cato and battie on the same team. seems kinda redundant. wonder if we can pry one of 'em away from the magic. they like getting fleeced by us...

I think their main goal will be to get minutes for Dwight Howard who should be able to score. Having both Howard and Gooden would simply delay Howard's development and make their passing on Okafor look especially stupid.

A much more likely scenerio would be picking up DeClercq 6'10" 255. He's a typical low minutes banger, but at $2.7 for just one year he is moderately cheap. One interesting thing about him is that he actually can shoot free throws hitting 81.5% last season.

The Cleveland area papers are suggesting that Diop and Wagner are being shopped. Potapenko of the Sonics was suggested as a possible target since he is on the last year of his contract. The salaries don't quite add up, but the Cavs are under the cap.
