I am a bit surprised that Goodwin hasn’t got a look. Granted we know who was calling plays but I at least thought there would be a rumor of an interview.

I also find it strange (or telling) that BA openly wanted Bettcher to get the job but not Goodwin. Anyone know if there was a falling out?

Does Arians suggest Bettcher for the bond he has with him or for the sake of the franchise?

Goodwin has interviewed for the Bucs and the Rams head coaching positions in the past. I would assume that the results of those interviews have led people to believe that he is either not ready or not head coach material in the NFL.

The reason, imo, that neither Goodwin or Bettcher have not garnered interest is because of Arizona's record over the past few years. When teams do well, their coaches get a lot of attention. And we haven't done much for the past two seasons. 2015 is a long time ago, in NFL years. As I said, that's just the way I see it.

I don't think that Goodwin would have to wait long for a job at the coordinator or OL coach level. I'd heard that people were interested in him as the head coach for the Sun Devils early in that process.

I think the reason that Bettcher and Goodwin aren't generating heat right now is because they're still under contract.

Interesting. When Head Coach goes, assistants in contracts will be given option to explore other opportunities in most cases. Don't think Cardinals would block such a thing. That means the assistants here are not well known or sort after (which in itself an issue)

I thought Goodwin has spoken with both the Bengals and another team about OL positions

Goodwin's up and down job with the Cardinals' OL has to be the main factor.

Bettcher would never have been hired as a DC at that point in his career by any other team. Any OC who has coached against him knows that he sells out versus the run (by crashing the OLBers) and abandons contain. The Cardinals lost both nationally televised games at home to the Cowboys and Seahawks in part due to easy QB read option runs by DP and RW.

I still remind a quote from arians
Goodwin a next head coach

He wasnt even able to fix offensive line issues and growing some young player and we signed 2 expensive free agents lineman

Thats why he doesnt gather any interest

That's not fair. In 2015, with Veldheer and Iupati (and Sendlein, Cooper, and Massie), the OL was 3rd in run blocking and 5th in pass pro (per Football Outsiders).

In 2016, the OL was still 7th in run blocking, but fell to 21st in pass pro as they integrated D.J. Humphries and A.Q. Shipley into the starting lineup and Veldheer was only healthy for 8 games.

I don't know where Mike Iupati got the reputation for being injury prone? He missed one game in 2016 and only appeared on the injury report that week. He missed 3 games in 2015 at the beginning of the year, but was mostly off the injury report. I dunno. I think this conventional wisdom is wrong, but I bet he could afford to lose some weight.

Neither are good enough to garner real HC interest. If Goodwin received HC interviews it probably was most likely due to Rooney rules. No other team has been dumb enough to interview Bettcher, which speaks volumes.
We need a fresh new face as HC. Don't want to keep any of the BA re-treads. BA not firing some of his coaches is part of the reason he is gone.

Again. My bigger point was that BA himself said he would like to see Bettcher get this job but didn’t say anything about Goodwin. That is odd to me.

I was thinking about this today---Goodwin has been with BA for more years (back to the Pittsburgh days and came with him to Indy) and was his OC for 5 years to Bettcher's 3 as DC. Imagine how Goodwin must feel now that Bettcher is BA's choice? BA was promoting Goodwin as a future HC way before Bettcher. Goodwin must feel like he just "GOT MOSSED."

Or possibly Goodwin has no desire to be a head coach. I know the next step up in my profession is not a job I covet, so I have past on the position in the past. Now if I were younger I would have probably "bite the bullet" and moved up, but I like what I do now.
