Just a quick little announcement...

The Google ads will be going away as a test on how other things perform. These changes will:

- Change from mostly text ads to banner ads
- Not be click = $$$, but sales = $$$
- Will go in the same spots and be the same basic sizes as the ads currently at the top and bottom of the forum.

The reason for this is that I have another site I use Google Ads on, and I've discovered that when you put your Google Ads on sites with low Click Through Rates, it lowers the amount you make on all of them.

Basically, this site only gets a .04% click through rate, while my other blog is around 2%. If your site falls below 2%, this can get you "smart priced" as they call it when Google lowers the amount you make per click.

So with all the impressions we get, I'm going to try some performance based ads with the following products:

- Sports tickets
- T-shirts
- Website hosting
- Sports equipment, apparrel and other stuff

Hopefully this wont be a huge change...you may see the banner ads as being a bit more "colorful" and therefore intrusive, and if you have complaints, let me know.

Otherwise, I have a question for you:

What kinds of ads would you see on this site that would make you click on them? I just want to get an idea of what kind of products you guys buy that would be of interest.

Thanks for your support!

Mike

Well, I like the t-shirt ads and, embarrassingly, haven't clicked an ad until just now. (Sorry, Mike.)

Anything sports related or kinda off-the-wall would interest me. And local stuff would as well, though I know this is not a likely (or necessarily profitable) option.

I'll try to do more with the clicking, regardless of what is up there. :)

Well, I'm glad coming from a woman, that the t-shirt ads are cool :) They do tend to have girls on them, which of course attracts more clicks from people.

All of those banners though are commission based, meaning just clicking doesn't help, you also have to buy.

But that's alright, the amount we were making before wasn't very much, so even if we just get a sale or two, maybe tickets, shirts, etc., it will probably all even out.

Hopefully we'll get different advertisers up there from time to time.

It's alright...if they had been making us close to what it cost to pay for the hosting here, I wouldn't have done it...but the revenue was essentially below $100 a month, nothing compared to what I was hoping, so we'll see how this route goes.

The thing about Google...if you have their ads up and the click through rate is less than 2%, then you get "smart priced" meaning all those clicks start counting for a fraction of what they could potentially be.

For example:

ASFN gets like a .04% click through rate, meaning instead of a click being worth $1.50, it might be worth only $0.15....

But if the site were doing 3% click through rate, we'd get that $1.50....so the money isn't really enough, plus my own blog uses Google, it gets a better click through rate, yet i get nothing for it because ASFN brings down my entire account.

I've babbled on, but that sort of explains it all.

beautiful looking?

I guess I like them better than the text ads, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them "beautiful looking" (unless you're referring to the women IN the t-shirts, and you better not be!!)

I do think some of the ads push the envelope of keeping the site pg-13, but that's jmho...

I think some of them are a bit racy, but part of having ads is making them click-worthy...with this site full of guys, I can't puts ads up of dudes in t-shirts and expect them to click on it :)

But if they are too much, we can reconsider, but I don't think they are anything worse than what they see on MySpace...which has much worse stuff.

I understand, and for the record, I wasn't complaining...just more of an observation, that's all. They don't bother me in the least. :)
