National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Gotham FC has confirmed the signing of Brazil international Geyse on loan from Manchester United.reported on March 3 that Gotham was in advanced talks with United over the transfer. She has now joined for the 2025 season with an option to make the move permanent.
“I am very happy and excited to join Gotham FC for this season,” Geyse said, via Gotham’s website. “I chose Gotham FC because they have a winning profile and a lot of ambition to win titles. I can’t wait to wear this jersey and enjoy the field with my new teammates. Let’s go Gotham!”
Geyse joined United from Barcelona in August 2023 for a club-record fee. She made 21 appearances for Marc Skinner’s side as they finished fifth in the Women’s Super League (WSL).
The 26-year-old had played nine games this season, starting six. Geyse went on compassionate leave in January, which she spent in Brazil following the death of her brother in a car accident, before returning to the side as a substitute on March 2 in a 2-0 WSL win over Leicester City.
After the Leicester match, Geyse posted a statement on Instagram describing an environment in which “inner peace is difficult to find.”
“Staying in a place where we don’t feel happy is an agonising and lonely feeling. Every day seems heavier, and the simple fact of being there becomes a burden,” the forward wrote. “The environment, which should be welcoming, becomes a field of discomfort, where inner peace is difficult to find. When we are not in tune with what surrounds us, the world around us loses its colour and energy.”
After the post, Skinner confirmed that Gotham was in discussions to sign Geyse and said United was working to find a solution and ensure that “Geyse is absolutely looked after and has all the care that she needs.”
He also stressed that the club had been providing Geyse with well-being support.
Geyse joins a Gotham side that is looking to recapture the NWSL championship. After winning the title in 2023, they reached the semi-finals of the playoffs the following year, where they were defeated on penalties by eventual champions the Washington Spirit.
