I think Grace picked the wrong time to go public with his desire to be the next manager of the Diamondbacks. Going to the media before the season is over shows a lack of respect and in my opinion was classless. He should of waited until after the season was over and gone to the organization, not the media.

By the way, no way Grace should be the manager. Backman and Hale deserve a shot more than him.

I agree with both points. Plus, Grace turning down the opportunity to manage in the Minors this season should not be rewarded with the big promotion.

Bob Brenly, with Catching, coaching, and T.V. analysis experience, seemed to have great qualifications to manage.

But he was unproven in one area, and, in the long run, it did him in -- communicating and coordinating the activities of 25-40 ballplayers.

To take that same chance again so soon, with a guy who not only hasn't managed, but hasn't coached -- whose only experience is playing, plus one year of color commentary -- would be asking for trouble.

If Mark Grace wants to manage at the Major League level, he should first show the world -- and himself -- what his strong points and weak points would be.

Until then, D'backs management should hold firm that his managerial path begin at the Minor League level.

Besides, Joe Garagiola, Sr., would have a fit if another cigarette smoker spends time in the tunnel puffing away. :nono:

I don't see anything wrong with him expressing an interest in managing the team. He was probably asked the question and gave an honest answer.

This idea has been floating around since the end of last season, and I believe the idea was for him to spend a year in the booth studying the game and then move to the dugout.

It will be sad to see Pedrique get axed as a result of THIS team's performance, although he will probably be happy when it is over. I cannot imagine loving your job when it has gone so horribly wrong for him this season.

Are you kidding?

The season has been over for months.

I have no problem with him throwing his hat in the ring. I don't know if he's the best choice but I don't have a problem. The Dbacks may be starting to put together a list of candidates and Grace may be aware of this.

As for going to the media he may want to test the waters and see how the media and fans feel about him being the new manager. The Dbacks are gonna suck next year no matter who manages. It would be a good PR move to get someone the public likes.

Whoever manages next year won't be here when the Dbacks finally get good again anyway.

What the Dbacks need is for Buck Showalter to come back and build them a new contender. Then let Grace take over in 3 years and win another ring.

Jeez, and I thought there could only be one Joe G. Jr. :p First, Buck would never come back after he was shown the door. He also is doing very well in Texas.

With no coaching experience, Grace needs to coach somewhere in the minors but he has already turned it down. I doubt he would be willing to do it. He wants to start at the top. I would prefer a Wally Backman or Chip Hale, guys who have coached in the minors with success.

As for the Diamondbacks next year, I don't expect them to win the division but they will be more competitive. The Giants and Dodgers are going to be cutting back while I see the Diamondbacks spending more than we think. I am looking forward to development of guys like Tracy and Aquino. Terrero needs to cut down on his strikeouts and hopefully he'll learn during winter ball. I also can't wait to see Quinten and Jackson playing. I have a feeling theu might be playing at BOB next September.
