Here are my grades for the guys we brought in this past season. I'm not including rookies.

Derek Anderson: F-, can't get worse than this.
Alan Faneca: wanted to give him a F but he's done halfway decent at times C-
Rex Hadnot: Incomplete, no not another DA pass, but he hasn't really played.
Joey Porter: D-, for the money, he's been putrid
Paris Lenon: he started out OK but has been Derek Anderson-like level of play at LB lately, D
Kerry Rhodes; same as Lenon but i'll give him a D+ for some big plays early on.
Jay Feely: A he's been slid when given tha chance.

That's overall a pretty piss poor class of veteran additions to the team. Am I forgetting anyone of significance?

What are your grades?

I'm not quite as harsh a grader as you.
DA- D-, he's right about equal to his career averages. I can't fault him for doing what any sane GM or coach would have expected him to do given his track record. He's actually got a better completion percentage than he did his last two years in Cleveland.

Faneca- C+, This guy is nothing but a road grader and we pass 70% of the time. I don't know what the point of signing him to play him to his weakness was. Can't fault him for that.

Hadnot- Hadnot played all season. Inc.

Porter- C-, 5 sacks and 2 FF after 11 games. On course to get 7-8 sacks. He had 9 last year. He was brought in to pass rush. Realistically he shouldn't be playing as much as he is. He's never been a run stuffer so to expect him to be one is unfair.

Lenon- C, On course to get 90 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 3 INTs. For a guy who we believed was going to be a rotational bench player when we signed him, that's pretty good. That Whiz/Davis plays him over Washington is not his fault. For the money he's fine. Just shouldn't be starting.

Rhodes- D+, Projected to get 81 tackles, 3 INTs. Also has gotten torched. Granted, any secondary player will look bad when you have a horrible pass rush. Ed Reed and Troy Polumalu couldn't save this secondary without a pass rush.

Feely- A+, 92.9 FG%, first in NFC, second in League (Bironas is first). If we had had more onside opportunities, he'd either look even better or he'd decline, but when you can't score TDs and even getting down field for a FG is a chore, onside chances just don't show up.

I don't know who you've been watching, but I give Rhodes a B+. He's the only member of the starting secondary that covers the middle of the field, and he hasn't given up on the season. He's made some huge plays. Hell, last week he had about the only good defensive play of the game, chasing the RB down on the goal line to deny a TD.

DA- Z-terrible player who deserves the last letter in the alphabet

Faneca-C played better as the season went along & I wont be suprised to see him retire after the season

Porter- D OMG the crap talker deluxe hasn't had must to talk about because of his poor play

Lenon- D- had a suprise first 5 games but has been missing during the losing streak. He is what he is...a spare

Rhodes- B solid season & stable pickup

Feely- B only missed 1 FG all year but really hasn't been challenged due to inept offense

I'd grade Rhodes out higher too a solid B, he was one of the few guys actually trying last week against SF when the rest of the team seemed to be going through the motions.

Can you get a negative grade? Because that is what the signing of DA deserves.

Your grading scheme is all screwed up, and I SO want to post a THESMEL grading scheme for my own, but instead:

DA: D- , not just inaccurate, but misses opportunities, shouldn't be starting

Feely: A, does his job well, brings same type of attitude as Rackers and hasn't choked - fair swap

Faneca: C, good pickup as a leader by example; D for having the offensive staff not having Hadnot beat him out over the season.

Porter: C for what he brings as an old man; D- after the Davis effect of having an old man starting and playing essentially every rep instead of too his strengths

Lenon: A for the backup role he has; C- after the Davis effect where is is supposed to cover on pass plays and continue to start after Hayes returns

Rhodes: B+, good FS, lacking some aggressiveness; C after the Davis effect since he has to play extra safe as we realize we have Wilson and Lenon not covering routes that Rhodes will have to be extra cautious to cover after they are beat

So personnel wise, I think the pickups were pretty good overall. Cutting Cody Brown should be in the equation, which was stupid given lack of depth and youth at LB. But that does point out the reailty:

Bill Davis: F and as 'assclown' tag to boot. Thanks for taking mediocre acquisitions and actually making them play WORSE.

Yeah, Rhodes and Feely rock. DA gets an incomplete for his grade and in life. :D
The rest...meh. I hope Hadnot pans out and Porter finds the fountain of youth, and shows AW where its at.

How is my grading system "messed up" when you basically give everyone the same grad I did except for Rhodes . Unless your system is messed up too. And how, when a kicker is the only good pickup, do you think the pickups were pretty good overall? Again  .
Rhodes got off to a good start but has been pretty much trash the last 5-6 weeks. I didn't give points for trying. They're supposed to try. I gave them on production.

Sorry, my bad - I was just viewing the video of the thesmel dialogue and his grading scheme for Leinhart and my post got off track :)

I agree with you, except that we need to add in the Davis-effect weighting method, based on interpolating the acquisitions play this season and the correlation with the role Davis has given them, correlated with the surrounding cast ability and the role Davis has given them.

I mean - really - if we had a decent coordinator instead of a LB coach calling plays, we would be thinking how we got extra life out of Lenon than we expected, how Rhoades has allowed Wilson to not have to cover anyone and the amazing potential Washington has in his part time role.

Our biggest complaint would be we paid too much for Porter to play 30% of the snaps at 100% pay scale and we may be sitting around .500

Do we have any still on the board since the season started tanking?

That we do have! sometimes it may not sound like it but we are all fans here! The die-hards here are fans although some are kool-aiders, dark-siders, or somewhere in-between.

We are the ones who went to SDS in the 110 scorching heat on the easy-bake oven seats just to watch a disaster (and to see the Larry Centers show).

A few more seasons of bad football will allow the rest of us plenty of room to tailgate. We won't give up as long as there is football and plenty of alcohol to numb the pain, we'll be there!
