New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye finally has a No. 1 receiving target.

On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Patriots had agreed to a three-year, $69 million deal with four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs. It's an expensive contract for a 31-year-old wide receiver coming off a torn ACL injury.

Per Schefter, the contract has $26 million in guaranteed money.

The Patriots left no stone unturned in their continued search for a top receiver. They failed to land one in free agency last year, and for a while, it looked like they were headed toward the same disappointment in 2025.

Diggs instantly projects as the top target on offense for the Patriots. He's a former All-Pro receiver who was well on his way to a seventh straight 1,000-yard receiving season before he went down with the knee injury.

An argument could be made that the Patriots overpaid for an aging player coming off a serious injury. However, the team was in a position where they had to overpay for a major position of need. They're a losing team coming off back-to-back 4-13 seasons.

They have to crawl before they can walk. And crawling means overpaying for players in hopes that the team becomes respectable enough to be more attractive to outside talent.

Diggs has a long history of being a high-volume target with sophisticated route-running and separation ability. He will find ways to consistently get open and take some of the attention away from other players.

There's hope that his play on the field can elevate the talent around him, particularly from players like Demario Douglas, Kendrick Bourne and Kayshon Boutte.
