I was listening to a Suns podcast today called the Solar Panel. They had Jared Dudley on. He was fantastic talking about Sarver as well as digging into the young guys and his role on the team. It starts off at the 24 min mark with some fluff, but it gets really insightful including some poignant criticism of our young guys as well as his thoughts on a few draft prospects.

I am having trouble getting the podcast to work.

Anything in particular that stands out to you regarding the draft, veterans and Bledsoe?

I love the solar panel.

Let's be clear it's very constructive criticism. He says his role on the team is to help the young guys get better at the things they need to get better at.

Some highlights:

A lot of people think he is building a resume and angling for a commentating gig, but I personally think he has coaching in his sights.

Dudley described his role in Milwaukee in helping develop Giannis. He would disrespect him in practice and told him he would guard him how his opponents would and would go under every screen and make him shoot.

He has a similar role in Phoenix in developing the young guys. Booker is sometimes lazy and looks for the shortcut at times. He has outstanding court vision and passing abilities and could average 7 assists if given the opportunity. Obviously a great scorer but doesn't know if he can develop the defensive game. Coaches him throughout the game telling him what teams are trying to do to him and what he can do to capitalize on it and help the team.

Chriss is behind mentally in his knowledge of the game and how to play. He needs to work on his footwork and post-up game.

He talked a lot about veteran leadership and what he does on and off the court teaching the young guys how to be pros.

On the draft. He made sure to talk up Bledsoe, but he discussed the playmaking abilities of Ball and how sorely the Suns need ball movement and we're in the bottom of assistd. Talked up Jackson and the defense he could add to the team and how he wouldn't compete for scoring opportunities. He likes Fox and mentioned picking him if the consensus 3 were off the board, but backtracked and talked up Bledsoe again. Doesn't know a lot about Isaac but maybe you pick him and see who out of Isaac, Chriss, and Bender cab become the guy or guys.

Talked about Sarver being a player's owner who cares about the players. He meets with all of them and makes sure they are set up financially so they don't go broke.

He has a special relationship with Sarver. He was told he would be traded to LA and was actually briefed on a possible trade to Memphis that Sarver allowed him to decline prior to the LA trade. He did the same thing for Nash. Sarver may have made mistakes early on that led to his rep, but his experience was good.

Overall, a really insightful interview that you should listen to. I really think he has coaching in his future.

That is a good quality for an investment counselor. Unfortunately as the owner of a major sports franchise, Sarver has made too many mistakes.

How about this? He sells the team and stays on as an investment counselor to the players. :)

I don't know if Sarver is or is not a model owner at this point, but virtually all signs over the last couple years have been positive. His players like him, he has stopped meddling and he has listened to the fan base on some issues (example, the hideous aesthetics that the franchise has departed from).

I'd be very weary of a new owner. I'd rather have an owner who has learned from his mistakes than a new one who might make them all over again... and who might be inclined to move the team to say... Seattle, should things not go his way.

If some local super rich guy who I thought was wicked smart wanted to buy the team, cool, but if the team went up for sale to the highest bidder I would be seriously concerned that the Phoenix Suns would cease to exist.
