"Nine days after undergoing surgery for thyroid cancer, Arizona pitcher Doug Davis has targeted May 9 at the Chicago Cubs for his return to the rotation.

Davis
Davis threw from 120 feet on Saturday afternoon.

"I felt real good out there throwing the ball," Davis said. "I don't feel any different right now than I did before surgery. A little sore in the neck area."

Davis had surgery for thyroid cancer April 10, two days after pitching the Diamondbacks to a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Davis had insisted on making his two scheduled starts before the operation to remove his thyroid gland. He said before the surgery he was optimistic about his recovery, and that he expected to be sidelined only four to six weeks".

So good to hear! Hope he is taking his time and isn't rushing back. But it sounds like things are going great! Welcome back DD.

The radiation pill he needs to take to kill the remaining cancer will make him weak. Once strong, he'll work his way back into game shape.

It will be good to have him back.

With the emergence of Owings and, if Randy's health can hold up, what a five-man starting rotation.

i love DD, but he's gotta take it easy...i think at wrigley is a little tough for his first start after that kind of surgery. i say the next homestand after that road trip if he's ready.

Well I'm glad we've got your medical expertise weighing in on this decision.

I too hope Davis doesn't rush himself back. Just get healthy for the long haul.

I say DD should take all the time he needs to get back. His health is more important than baseball.

well im glad we have your smart ass comment in the mix. i didn't realize it took an expert to see that if he comes back and gets hammered at wrigley in his first start back then that wouldn't do well for his confidence. a home start, in my expert opinion, would be easier for him to get back in his flow.

I just think its silly that everyone says stuff like "he should rest as much as possible, thats whats important". Thats like posting that the sky is blue. Obviously he'll come back when the doctors, himself and the team thinks he's ready.

i know that, im saying what i think is right, which means what i think the doctors will say. im thinking a start on the road in wrigley would not be good, and i would hope the doctors and coaches would say the same thing, especially if he's going to come back less than 4 weeks after surgery when they were originally saying maybe 6 weeks!

Davis will start for the Diamondbacks on Friday against Atlanta, Scherzer will probably move to the pen.

This is a forum. We all have opinions. Isn't that the point?
