Rumor from an inside source, who's usually pretty reliable, states that MLB has their eyes on Phoenix as host of the 2010 All Star Game. Usually, the locations alternate per league site on a yearly basis, however reports are that the A's have been promised the All Star Game, and their new stadium is slated to open in 2011.

According to this source, the 2010 game is up between Phoenix and Miami. Take this at face.

Sweet, my cousin wanted to go to SF to see the last one. Hopefully we won't have to wait. It will be a while since we have had an all star game in any sport if I remember correctly.

All-Stars unlikely in Phoenix for a while, according to the Arizona Republic

According to this article, is appears that is unlikely that Phoenix will get the All-Star Game.

This appears to be very unfair. What can we do, as Arizona Diamondbacks fans, to get Major League Baseball to accept the Diamondbacks as the host of the All-Star Game?

That article is old, so perhaps this is new news? If we could somehow change baseball to a winter sport, I think AZs chances of getting the game go through the roof!

I hope the 2010 rumor is true though, the first leg of light rail will be running by then, the Sheraton Downtown will be open, hopefully Hotel Monroe will be open, the new convention center will be open, the first phase of Cityscape will probably be open as well as a good chunk of the Jackson St district, ASU downtown will create a lot more livelihood, downtown will really be coming into its own.

I still doubt we get it. We have horrible weather this time of year and Chase Field sucks. There would be very little fanfare for the game if it was held here.

What are you talking about? Little fanfare? They would sell out. Weather would not play a role in the game because the roof would be shut.

The roof could be open depending on the day, I think the new ownership has been doing a fairly good job of living up to their promise of keeping it open. I love that stadium when the panels and roof are open. If they cool it all day, then open everything up at night, it stays cool enough for the game, they could certainly do this for the ASG.

Chase is a big hanger with a baseball field in it. Don't get me wrong - it's a decent place to actually watch a game. But in terms of being a good traditional baseball park I don't think it's that great, especially for being relatively new. I understand that we were an expansion club and that building a retractable roof stadium is pricey - but that doesnt change the fact that it's a big box with very little unique features (other than a cheesy swimming pool and a landing strip between the mound and home plate).

Here's a Seinfeld quote to illustrate my point:

"The female body is a work of art. The male body is utilitarian. It's for gettin' around. It's like a Jeep"

Chase is a utilitarian stadium - it serves a purpose and gets the job done. New parks like AT&T, PNC, Jacobs and Petco are the sexy chicks you want to take home. Obviously the need for having a roof changes your budget - but in terms of sex appeal Chase has none.

In terms of fanfare I was meaning national fanfare, not local. Obviously everyone here would be pumped, but most fans across the country would yawn. Selig doesn't want that because the ASG is struggling as it is. That's why I don't see Chase getting an All Star Game - not to mention the weather is brutal this time of year. I think it would be a PR nightmare.

Weather would play a part in the whole experience whether or not there is a roof. Walking to and from the stadium in 100 plus degree weather is not fun. I like the idea of Arizona getting the All Star game, but I don't like the idea of visiting AZ in July.

The traditional baseball park is a bunch of baloney. The All-Star game was played in Milwaukee five years ago and Chase Field is so much better. The All-Star games have been played in dome stadiums like the Astrodome, Kingdom and the Metrodome. Plus they were held in all those cookie-cutter stadiums in the past.

I think Chase Field looks better on the TV than the stadiums mentioned above, plus the average baseball fan has not seen many games on TV played at Chase.
