No one from the Mountain West Conference was cheering "Go Broncos" when Boise State hammered Utah 36-3 and held off Wyoming 17-10, but now the MWC is delighted to see Boise State (12-0) likely advancing to the Fiesta Bowl.
MWC commissioner Craig Thompson confirmed Tuesday the non-automatic qualifying conferences agreed before this season to share an unannounced portion of bowl proceeds among themselves if any member advanced to a Bowl Championship Series game.
The BCS structure always has included a payout to the non-automatic qualifying conferences that don't get into a BCS game.
With expansion to a fifth BCS game and improved chances of a representative from a non-automatic qualifying conference, the MWC, Western Athletic (Boise State), Conference USA and Sun Belt agreed to share part of the additional benefit.
"It definitely will improve the financial position as far as the BCS distribution," Thompson said during the MWC conference call Tuesday. "We committed to each other to keep the bowl distribution formula amongst ourselves. By Boise State participating it will help our bottom line."
Thompson pointed to the work by all those conferences in negotiating the access change from a top six ranking in the final BCS standings to top 12.
"It's good for all of us," Thompson said. "I'm excited about the opportunity that's been provided to those conferences that don't get guaranteed automatic access each year."
Thompson said the MWC didn't share outside the league when Utah's undefeated 2004 team played in the Fiesta Bowl.
