Since taking over as general manager of the Green Bay Packers in 2018, Brian Gutekunst has made 72 total picks over seven different drafts. He will enter the 2025 NFL draft with eight picks, which will be his lowest number of picks since 2019 if he doesn't add more during the draft.
Reviewing the past can sometimes be the only way to understand what's possibly coming in the future.
Here’s a complete breakdown of Gutekunst’s seven-year draft history (2018-24) with the Packers.
Gutekunst prefers and prioritizes young and elite athletes in the first round. Eight of his nine first-rounders have been 22 years old or young; seven had a RAS of 9.0 or better.
2025 draft picks: No. 23 overall
Reed looks like a bit of an exception when it comes to elite athletes in the second round, but the Packers clocked him at under 4.4 in the 40-yard dash and clearly had no issues with his size and athleticism. The Packers want elite athletes in the first two rounds. After six straight picks on offense in the second round between 2019 and 2023, Gutekunst picked two defensive players in 2024.
2025 draft picks: No. 54 overall
The Packers appeared to bust the third-round curse with Sean Rhyan, a two-year starter, and Tucker Kraft, one of the NFL's emerging weapons at tight end. But the nightmare rookie season from MarShawn Lloyd has the curse alive and well. Avoiding the temptation to take swings on average athletes might be the key here. The Sternberger-Deguara-Rodgers run was bust-bust-bust.
2025 draft picks: No. 87 overall
The last four fourth-round picks are on the roster, and Doubs, Tom and Williams are key players. All five had a RAS of 8.0 or better. Historically, the Packers have done well with receivers and line of scrimmage players in the fourth round.
2025 draft picks: No. 124 overall
Some hits, some misses. The Packers have plucked some mid-tier starters in the fifth round but haven't necessarily hit a home run. The last five fifth-rounders remain on the roster. Some of the big misses came on average athletes.
2025 draft picks: No. 159 overall
McDuffie, Brooks and Glover remain on the roster and a few others are still floating around rosters in the NFL. Not many true sixth-round busts here.
2025 draft picks: No. 198 overall
The seventh round is a true crapshoot. Gutekunst has often stockpiled these picks, hoping one or two will hit and provide roster depth. He'll get two more chances in 2025. Two recent seventh-round picks -- Walker and Valentine -- will be key players next season.
2025 draft picks: No. 237 overall, No. 250 overall
Italics: still on roster
