Greene Co., TN — The boy’s high school state basketball tournament gets underway this week and Northeast Tennessee will be represented by two teams from Greene co. and neither are strangers to this time of the year.

In Greeneville, the Greene Devils in front of the student body, family, and friends loaded on a bus and headed to Murfreesboro. This will be their 8th appearance and 1st since 2022 when they captured the state championship led by Mr. Basketball finalist Trey Thompson the Greene Devils are treating this like a business trip.

“We have leaders on the court and not just me. You have Isaac, Dom Jarvis. They all take ownership and every single guy wants it and they’re going to play hard and hopefully bring it back, says Trey Thompson.”

“I think our guys understand turning the ball over is a big issue, and so I think we’re going to do a much better job of just taking care of the basketball and then also rebounding. And I think if we do, those things will give us a chance to win the next game. And that’s all that we’re worried about right now is we got one game and we’ll try to win that, says Brad Woolsey.”

Greeneville will face Munford on Thursday at noon.

Speaking of Trey Thompson, he was in line for the class 3-A Mr. Basketball award for the 2nd year in a row. The junior who’s been recruited by Tennessee, Purdue, and Xavier to name a few was beaten out by Upperman’s Ty Cobb, but as I mentioned he’s just a junior so he’ll probably get another opportunity next season.

Also hitting the road in front of the student body were the North Greene Huskies who are making their 7th trip to state and 2nd in a row. The Region 1 champion will bring a 30-4 record into their game with Humbolt which has a rich basketball history with 19 appearances in the state tournament and 3 state titles. Right now the Huskies are just focused on getting out of the first round, the last time it happened was 4 years ago.

“It’s just it’s amazing. It really is an amazing feeling going back going back with the people I’ve been with the past two years. It’s just it feels great, says Davenport.”

“It’s going to be a contrast of styles where we like to kind of play in the fifties. They like to get up and down and press. So if we can go down there and make the game, kind of maybe mock it up a little bit, we got to take care of the ball and just kind of do what we do. But I think the team that kind of gets the game to morph into their style will be the team that will have the advantage, says Tarleton.”

The Huskies and Humbolt tip off Wednesday at 10:30 am.
