Rex Grossman's latest meltdown reportedly will have him standing on the sidelines this week.

The Chicago Bears need to bench Rex Grossman, and not just for a game or two. For good, writes Len Pasquarelli. Story

The Chicago Tribune, citing an anonymous source, reported on its Web site that backup Brian Griese will replace Grossman as the starting quarterback when the Bears face the Lions.

Chicago returns to practice on Wednesday to prepare for Sunday's game at Detroit.

Grossman threw three interceptions as the Chicago Bears fell to the Dallas Cowboys 34-10 on Sunday night.

Grossman ranks 23rd in the league with 500 yards, has a 45.2 rating and is 47-of-89 (52.8 percent) with a league-leading six interceptions and just one touchdown.

A Pro Bowl pick with Denver in 2000, Griese has passed for 16,564 yards, but has also been released three times -- by the Broncos, Miami and Tampa Bay.

I think the national media had as much to do with Rex's downfall as Rex did. It's a shame really. The guy led them to a 13-3 record and all they could talk about is how bad he sucked. Even before the Superbowl. Rex definietly deserved critism, just not as much as he got. I think he got most of it because he handled it so well in interviews. Too bad I like Rex.

He didn't lead them to a 13-3 record, at least not after the first couple of games. The game against us was his downfall, prior to that he looked like an MVP. Afterwards...

I like him too and he'll probably start him again soon. I hope Lovie doesn't come up with a "passing package" for Griese, and have Rex play during the "hand-off to RB package".

Grossman has his own ineptitude to blame. He flat out sucks!

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the team responds to the change. Could be enough of a change on the field and in the teams mentality to get them back on track.

I agree to a point. I was watching the preseason Bears-Colts game and after he came out Andrea Kramer questioned him for like 5 minutes and she was basically saying why do you suck so much, nobody has confidence in you etc. He handled it with great tact and class and at the end AK was like thanks for being such a good sport.

What kind of crap is that? I'll tell you another thing this all stemmed from him having a bad game and everyone got on his crap. This could be the same path ML goes down if everyone gets on his butt about a couple of bad games. Everyone is mad about Rolle (Except for cbus) and calling him a bust, can you imagine if the same thing happens to our QBOF?

That's the dangerous path we tread when we start smashing players for bad games, or starting rumors that they're boozing with Fez grabbing boobs the night before the game, and that his backup should play, or that he sucks.

It's bad enough we have had a lot of first round busts...it will be even worse if we the fans and media don't stand behind and support our franchise QB after a few bad games, because of jumping to conclusions or bashing him.

Yep! Things are great in Chi-town!!! I hope the Bears lose every game they play. It is a riot listening to sports radio here. There are a team in trouble. They are a mirror of what they were last year and in some way we played a role. We laid out the blueprint to the rest of the league on ole Rex. They keep saying since game 6 of last year.(that was us!).......I think it's 30 TO's in the last 13 games.

To be fair, Chicago has had some serious losses on the defensive side of the ball this year and that has hurt them more than Rex's horrible play. They also didn't keep Thomas Jones which hurt the offense more than anything. I think their young TE will help now that he's healthy but the Bears better start scoring some points if they want to win.

As far as Rex goes, he's had some drops by his receivers that haven't helped any but when QB's are in a funk that just seems to happen. Same thing happened to Leinart against the Ravens. He'd finally make a good throw and wouldn't get any help from the receiver. Speaking of Grossman and Leinart in the same thought, they've both had about the same number of starts and both have seemingly hit a wall. Is it possible that the league has figured both of them out or are they just going through growing pains?

This is a long time coming. I was calling for it pre-season of last year.

I still think the Browns are going nowhere this year. Though, Griese starting improves them a bit. The Cowboys exposed their "vaunted" D in my opinion.

Edit: Bears, not Browns. ;) (Looks like I'm used to the Browns never going anywhere!)

their "vaunted D" was missing three of it's best players for most of the game with Brown, Briggs and Vasher all out for most if not all of the game.

Losing Mike Brown kills that team.

I don't think the defense will be nearly as dominant as last year, but I think with the move to Greise they're still one of the best teams in the NFC. Look for them, Dallas and Philly to be the favorites headed into the playoffs.

The interesting thing will be how Griese has matured. In Denver he basically got himself cut for being immature, he wasn't a leader, he had some off field issues, and he basically lost the team in the locker room. That's why Jake was welcomed with such open arms, Jake was a very personable guy who bonded with the team, Griese kept to himself and players felt he had a tendency to shrink in big situations where Jake didn't shy away.

Eventually they figured out it was just a out of the frying pan into the fire change, but it will be interesting to see if Griese has changed, and I suspect he has. Also interesting to see how the Bears change, they were a deep passing team with Rex, not sure Griese has that arm but he's much more accurate in the intermediate stuff than Rex.
