Griezmann set to continue at Atletico Madrid despite MLS links
French forward Antoine Griezmann is determined to continue at Atletico Madrid despite speculation over his future.
Diario AS reports that Griezmann’s representatives held positive talks with Spanish giants, with the Frenchman deciding to extend his association with Diego Simeone’s side.
The 34-year-old’s future at Wando Metropolitano Stadium has been plunged into uncertainty since reports broke out that he was contemplating a move to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC this summer.
Griezmann could now be set for a contract extension after performing a U-turn to stay at Atletico. His current deal expires in June 2026.
The talisman forward, who retired from international duty last year, will go down as one of the most prominent names in Atleticos’s history.
He is the club’s top scorer with 197 goals and ranks eighth for appearances (431).
Griezmann has revived his career since re-joining Atletico in 2022 following a troubled stint at Barcelona.
He concluded the 2023/24 season with 24 goals and eight assists in all competitions.
But his form has suffered a dip over the last couple of months, with Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth taking up the scoring duties.
Nevertheless, Griezmann’s experience and quality are integral to Simeone’s side, who are competing for La Liga and Copa del Rey.
The former Real Sociedad’s trophy cabinet is also stacked with major titles, including the Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup, FIFA World Cup and Nations League.
The La Liga and Champions League keep evading him, but he will not go down without conquering them in the Atletico shirt.
Los Rojiblancos are currently third in the La Liga table, four points adrift of Real Madrid.
