GVSU men swim to three NCAA titles and fourth place overall; women 8th in stellar meet

The Grand Valley State men's swimming and diving team used a trio of national titles to finish fourth at the NCAA Division II Championships during the weekend in Indianapolis.

The fourth-place finish earned the Lakers a team trophy for the first time in nearly two decades.

GVSU scored 291.5 points to finish behind Drury (525), Tampa (451) and McKendree (349).

In the women's meet, GVSU was eighth with 198 points. Nova Southeastern won with 475.

"Winning the 400 free relay to finish the meet with a fourth-place men's finish and eighth-place women's overall finish was incredible," GVSU coach Andy Boyce said. "I couldn't be more proud of both teams and my coaching staff."

Matt Bosch won the NCAA title in the 100-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 42.42, the lone individual national title of the week. Bosch also took third in the 200 free with a time of 1:33.71.

The 400 free relay squad touched the wall at 2:52.58 to take home the NCAA title with Bosch joined by Evan Scotto DiVetta, Aaron Dies and Carsyn Christoffel.

The men also brought home a championship in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:18.10 with Bosch joined by Scotto Divetta Dies, and Prado.

Scotto DiVetta broke a school record in the 50 free during prelims and went on to take fourth place in the finals with a time of 19.59, earning All-American honors.

The 400 medley relay finished third in 3:08.52.

The men's 200 medley relay, composed of Aaron Dies, Andrew Goh, Esteban Nunez Del Prado, and Evan Scotto DiVetta, finished sixth with a time of 1:25.73. All earning All-American honors.

The men's 800 free relay team included Matt Bosch, Austin Millard, Anton Rauch, and Carsyn Christoffel. They were placed in the sixth lane and finished with a time of 6:28.56, taking sixth place for the Lakers.

In the women's meet, GVSU's Lucy Hedley finished NCAA runner-up in the 500 freestyle with a swim of 4:47.57.

Lucy Hedley touched the wall for the Lakers in the 100 free with a time of 49.68. She placed fifth and was named All-American. She touched the wall at 1:47.12 in the finals to take fourth place in the 200 free.

The women's 800 free relay touched the wall at 7:17.83, securing fourth place in Nationals. Members of this event were Lucy Hedley, Vittoria Proietti, Angelica Angilletta, and Katie O'Connell. This group broke the school record by almost six seconds, a record that had stood for nearly 10 years.

Maddie Kooistra took third place in the women's 1-meter dive with a score of 441.65 and was third on 3-meter with a score fo 506.55.

On the women's side of the pool, Katie O'Connell finished with a time of 4:16.36 in the 400 IM to take home the hardware in third place. O'Connell broke her own school record in this event.
