Chris Guess − a hall of fame girls basketball coach − is returning to Iowa high school sports.

Guess will take over as head coach of the Van Meter girls basketball program, the school announced on social media on April 17. He returns to central Iowa after two years as an assistant in the college ranks, first with Northwest Missouri State and most recently with South Dakota.

He amassed a 489-219 overall record in his 32-year career as a high school head coach, making 15 state tournament appearances and claiming two state championships.

Guess won two titles at Waukee, and he coached at Centerville, Glenwood, Ottumwa and Waukee Northwest as well. He served as the first head coach for the Wolves after the school opened in 2021.

Guess was inducted into the Iowa Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022. He was also a finalist for the National Coach of the Year in 2022 and a nominee in 2015. He was named Class 5A State Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2021.

He sent multiple players to Division I basketball teams, including Katie Dinnebier to Drake and Carlie Littlefield first to Princeton and then to North Carolina.
