Brad Halsey doesn't have Randy Johnson's Ichabod Crane frame or the famous scowl. He's 9 inches shorter and doesn't throw nearly as hard. But those were certainly Johnson-like results he put up Monday night.

Halsey, acquired from the New York Yankees in the trade for Johnson, made his starting debut for Arizona against Colorado on Monday night and treated the smallest crowd (18,742) in Bank One Ballpark history to a rarity - a pitching gem - in a 2-0 victory, outdueling the Rockies' Jason Jennings.

Halsey worked six innings and gave up just five hits before leaving after allowing a leadoff single on his 86th pitch in the seventh; he struck out a career-high seven batters and walked just one.

He also threw first-pitch strikes to 20 of the first 24 men he faced.

"That's always my game plan," said Halsey, who collected his first big-league win since beating the Dodgers last June while with the Yankees. "For me it has always been a strength. Getting ahead of hitters. That puts hitters into a more defensive position."

More important, in the wake of a wild series against the Dodgers (the teams produced 46 runs), his debut as the team's No. 5 starter gave an injury depleted and overworked bullpen much-needed rest.

"I wasn't counting on any more than five innings from him tonight, just because I knew what his pitch counts were in spring training," Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said. "For him to give us any more was more than we were looking. By doing that, we were able to use a select few from the bullpen to finish up the game."

Halsey allowed only two men to reach second base, giving up a one-out double to Clint Barmes in the first and then hitting Todd Helton with a pitch. He escaped with a strikeout and a groundout.

A two-out walk to Barmes in the third and a single by Helton put runners on first and second in the third, but he induced a fielder's choice to escape.

Halsey doesn't consider himself a strikeout pitcher and had trouble explaining his seven strikeouts.

"Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes," he said, laughing. "That's not usually my style. I was making a lot of pitches, not every one, but when I needed one. Definitely the first inning I had some jitters out there, but I got through them and calmed down as I got into the game."
