SIOUX FALLS — Second-seeded Hamlin began its title defense by rolling past Hill City 82-43 Thursday during the opening round of the state Class A boys basketball tournament.
Fellow area schools Groton Area and Clark-Willow Lake each suffered losses in games played at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
Here's a recap of Thursday's games:
Hamlin (21-2), playing in its third-straight state tourney, took advantage from the start against a Hil City team playing in its first-ever state tournament.
The Chargers raced to a 45-25 halftime lead and shot 62 percent (33 of 53) from the field.
Dawson Noem led a balanced attack for Hamlin with 18 points and eight rebounds.
"We got a big game out of Dawson Noem," Hamlin coach Todd Neuendorf told South Dakota Public Broadcasting. "Dawson is kind of an unsung hero because he does a lot of the dirty work. Today it was the offensive work he got done because we had a mismatch there."
Easton Neuendorf, Evan Stormo and Jackson Wadsworth each tallied 13 points and Boden Stevenson 12. Zac VanMeeteren added eight points and eight rebounds for Hamlin, which owned the boards 35-22.
"They're not very big and we capitalized on that," Todd Neuendorf said. "We wanted to get some stuff inside and when a shot went up, we sent all five guys to the boards."
Devin Buehler finished with 17 points and Zane Messick 16 for the Rangers, who shot only 28 percent (12 of 43) from the field.
Sioux Falls Christian, one of the pre-tourney favorites along with Hamlin, kicked off Thursday's schedule with the win over Groton Area.
Brant Wassenaar tallied 17 points and Britton Mulder 12 for the Chargers (22-1). GriffIn Goodbary chipped in with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Ryder Johnson and Karson Zak each scored 13 points for Groton Area (17-6). Keegen Tracy added eight points.
A fast start and good shooting helped Rapid City Christian (21-2) spoiled Clark-Willow Lake's first state A tournament game since 2015.
The Comets led 40-27 at halftime and shot 56 percent (27 of 48) from the field.
"We battled but just couldn't get over the hump," Clark-Willow Lake coach Jerome Nesheim said. "We cut the lead down to nine and just couldn't get enough stops. Their physicality wore on us."
Simon Kieffer's 20 points paced Rapid City Christian, who also got 14 points apiece from Julius Frog and Benson Kieffer and 10 from Aiden Roberts. Frog also hauled in eight rebounds.
The Cyclones (18-5) were led by Sully Felberg with 16 points and nine rebounds, Chris Bevers with 15 points and Emmerson Larson with 11 points.
