Last night my computer kept locking up on me. Everytime I restarted it got worse, to the point it wouldn't load up past the initial HP screen. When I ran the diagnostic tests, the hard drive failed the SMART Short Self Test. Everything I've read about it says that my hard drive is dead and I'm going to have to replace it. True? Is there anyway to save the files even if I do have to replace it?

You may be able to recover (some/all) files off of it but the drive definitely needs to be replaced.

I would put the drive in a usb external case and copy the files off of it or use a file recovery program if it has trouble reading or has FAT corruption.
