And apparently traded Valverde, per same article:

In a companion deal, the Diamondbacks are sending closer Jose Valverde to the Astros for reliever Chad Qualls, infielder Chris Burke and Class AAA right-hander Juan Gutierrez.

Here is the whole thing - probably will get updated again as it becomes official:

The A's have completed the first major trade involving a starting pitcher this off-season, sending right-hander Dan Haren to the Diamondbacks for a package of prospects, according to major-league sources.

Class AAA outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and Class AA left-hander Brett Anderson are among the players the A's will receive in the deal, sources say.

The trade marks the beginning of a rebuilding program for the A's as they build toward the opening of a new ballpark in 2011. Haren, the American League's starting pitcher in the 2007 All-Star Game, likely will not be the last player they trade.

Right-hander Joe Blanton also has been a topic of trade conversations, and will become the most attractive righty available in free agency or trade after free-agent right-hander Hiroki Kuroda chooses his team.

In a companion deal, the Diamondbacks are sending closer Jose Valverde to the Astros for reliever Chad Qualls, infielder Chris Burke and Class AAA right-hander Juan Gutierrez.

went 6-5 last year with 5 saves and a 3.05era. looks like a pretty good set-up guy.

Qualls was the closer for a portion of the season last year when Brad Lidge went through his struggles. Decent enough stuff, had a lot of strikeouts and could step in and replace Valverde, or at worst fill in as that 7th or 8th inning guy when Pena gets moved to the closers role.

Burke is a very solid utility guy. Scrappy and gritty. Could wind up playing 2B, SS and either of the corner IF and OF positions.

The star of this deal with Valverde deal may wind up being Juan Gutierrezl.

Gutierrez, whose name wasn't included in the initial report of the deal, was right there with Felipe Paulino as one of the top two pitching prospects left in the Houston system. Of the two, he's the better bet to last as a starting pitcher.

The 24-year-old could use at least another three months in Triple-A, but he has a chance to be a solid No. 3 or No. 4 for the Diamondbacks in time.

Still a while to go, but as of right now both moves look like steals for DBacks.

I really hope Haren hasn't been used up by Oakland as many other pitchers out of that system have. Josh Byrnes continues to prove he's the best personnel guy in Arizona in any sport.

to break these deals down..

Incoming

Dan Haren
Billy Buckner
Chris Burke
Juan Gutierrez
Chad Qualls

Outgoing

Jose Valverde
Carlos Gonzalez
Chris Carter
Alberto Callaspo
Brett Anderson
Dana Eveland
Greg Smith
Dana Eveland
Aaron Cunningham

Assessment:

Losing Valverde is tough, but at the same time this is a guy who wouldn't know a 1-2-3 inning if you spotted him the first 2 outs.

Carlos Gonzalez is going to be a very good OF on the Major League level, however his days were numbered when Byrnes re-signed.

Chris Carter is a prototypical DH. Arizona's not in the AL so he was replacable.

Bonafacio makes Callaspo expendable. Plus, maybe this opens the door for Hudson to be re-signed to a two or three year extension.

Cunningham had no long term future here. Eveland didn't seem to mesh too well either.

Anderson and Gonzalez are the prime chips of the Haren deal. I'll take that gamble, you got to give something to get something.

The team also picked up Houston's best pitching prospect, who is a young flame thrower as well as Buckner. Those two will replace Anderson and Smith as the young arms to drool over.

Qualls at worst steps in as the 7th or 8th inning specialist. At best, he becomes the closer here.

Burke is a gritty, gutsy player who hustles and leaves it all on the field. Every team could benefit from having a guy like him. He's able to play 2nd, SS and all three OF positions. Basically, he assumes the super utilityman role.

I'm happy about this deal all around. Good return package for what was traded.

Man hurts we lost Valverde but Haren defintally bulks up our starting rotation, plus i'm sure we can find someone like pena to be a decent closer for us.

Great trades for the Diamondbacks. Pena can step in and replace Papa Grande. Haren, Webb, a healthy RJ, Micah and Davis is a damn pretty good rotation!

He was gone before this deal happened.

It definitely spells the end of Livan's stay here.
Is that a good thing that Livan is no longer here?

On the trade I wish we could of kept Carlos and Chris Carter but other than that I like this trade also because doesn't Haren have some years left on his contract that is very cap friendly?...I have no idea about the pitchers we picked up though...like Buckner and the Houston prospects are they any good?

I loved Papa Grande Verde, but I think Pena can take over his spot. He's shown he's only a one inning guy anyway so it could be beneficial to not even let Bo Mel think of putting him in for multiple innings. He's got better stuff than Valverde anyway.

VERY VERY VERY VERY excited about the DBacks picking up Haren. The starters pissed me off last year, but with Webb, Haren and hopefully a healthy Johnson for the important part of the season, we are lookin good.

No cap in baseball but yes he is locked in for another three years at some absolutely ridiculous below market price. Santana is obviously the most dynamic arm in baseball right now but all things considered this is the type of trade that all 30 or so other GM's and owners look at green with envy.

Like Mao said Josh Byrnes is the best thing to happen to AZ sports in years. This guy does not get the credit he deserves but we actually just got back a legit ace to team with our current ace to form the best 1-2 in the NL. And we didnt give up Boficiano or Scherzer?? unbelievable.

The Valverde trade will be good provided somebody steps up to take that role. Qualls is one of the best set up guys in baseball although I dont want to see him become the closer. Burke is a good back up and I know nothing about the kid but if he really is one of their best two arms in Houston - Byrnes is a god.

So the only thing that could throw this whole thing into a tailspin? If someone doesn't step up to close games and we blow games in the 9th everyone will question this trade.

But I am not worried. I think we have an ace up our sleeve. Remember where you heard this first.

Max Scherzer will be our closer next year and if hes as good as i think he is we will be pitching in the all star game come next July.

Haren has a great value (3 years left on his deal at a scream of a deal). As for giving up Carter and Gonzalez, Carter is better suited to be DH anyhow and Gonzalez was locked by position.

As for Livan being gone, the Diamondbacks needed a change of pace pitcher. Davis and him were essentially one in the same.

Buckner has a nasty curveball and a bulldog mentality. I think he'll wind up being a great pickup for Arizona and the pitcher they got from Houston has nasty, nasty stuff.

Do you think that the D-Backs will use him as a fill in just incase Randy Johnson gets hurt again?

Another question is can you define the pitcher from Houstons "nasty nasty stuff"? Is it like Roger Clemons/Randy Johnson stuff or Nolan Ryans stuff or Justin Verlanders stuff? please explain

I hear Buckner has some control issues but seems like that is a correctable flaw.
