Hayden Senger's improbable journey from Lakota East High School to Miami University, to several years in the minor-leagues and an offseason job at Whole Foods as he continued to pursue his dream of playing in the big leagues has resulted in a spot on the New York Mets' Opening Day roster.
Senger, a 24th-round pick of the Mets in the 2018 draft, was told during a meeting with manager Carlos Mendoza and longtime catching instructors Glenn Sherlock and Bob Natal that he's joining second-string catcher Luis Torrens on the Mets' roster.
Francisco Alvarez suffered a wrist injury during Spring Training; Senger, known for his defensive skills as a catcher, earned the Mets' Minor League Platinum Glove winner in 2023.
"I feel like I couldn't really get words out," Senger said, per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. "All the years that I put in kind of overwhelmed me. Pretty speechless."
"It is a good story," Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said, per DiComo. "He's not getting the job because it's a good story. He's getting the job because we think he can help us win games."
