This is getting a lot more airplay than I expected. Hank Nichols is the head of the NCAA refs he says the play could have been called a T on Tim Morris if the ref felt it was intentional. McCabe the head of Pac 10 refs agreed a T could have been called but said in this case it was Aboya's fault not Morris' and it wasn't intentional.

His contention is if Aboya hadn't "moved to the right" the ball would have gone right past him without touching him. I still think the call came out right a T there would have been devastating, but come on, they were at most 2 feet apart and Morris threw a bullet one hand overhand throw, there's no way in hell Aboya moved into the throw because even Morris admits he tried to hit Aboya, just not in the face.

I would expect a rule change from all this not sure what it will be but it seems when supervisors of officials are disagreeing on it that will result in some sort of rule change.

A T there and it's 2 shots and the ball for UCLA so they likely cut the lead to 4 with the ball, to me that would have been unfair to UW.

A T would have been devastating, but if it's warranted, it has to be called irregardless of the situation. I don't necessarily think Morris meant to hit Aboya directly in the face, but he did throw intentionally towards the upper part of Aboya's body. Throw it at the guys thighs, hip, stomach, not near a guy's head.

Largely because it made it obvious that the current rule is too vague and requires the refs to make a leap of faith to call something. Nichols and McCabe both agree they don't want players to do intentionally what Morris did, they just disagree on whether it was intentional or not.

I would assume the rule change will either involve requiring the player guarding the inbounds to be off a certain distance, or will allow a ref to call unsportsmanlike WITHOUT assessing a T so they lose possession but don't give up 2 FT's?

Jon Wilner said in his blog that he's hearing the likely outcome is a rule change because right now it's so unclear if Morris even broke a rule by doing what he did.

I think the end result was right, UCLA was actually down 5 at the time if they call a T it's a 3 point game with UCLA having the ball and a chance to tie, that's just a HUGE turnaround to make on one call.

For what it's worth, I thought the guy threw it right in Aboya's face on purpose.

There will be more of this, as long as Howland plays thug ball and the refs reward it. Other team's kids will blow up in frustration and retaliate.

Interesting how you keep calling UCLA "thug ball" yet, the dirtiest plays in UCLA games always seem to be committed by the other team. Typical west coast crybaby. A little physicality and you can't handle it.

Brings back a bad memory of a time when I was playing HS ball ( a long time ago). I had it done to me, on an inbound pass. It was intentional I got the T and ejection ( following 2 games also ) after an opponent did the same to me, and I got off the deck and busted him in the beak. When it happens, it is intentional. I never would have popped the guy if the ref had made the call. He actually told me it was part of the game. BS.
