Help--Home Network Problem

I had a terrible virus recently that promptd me to wipe my drive and reinstall Windows XP. The virus is gone and the machine is running like a dream, except that I can't get my two computers to talk to each other anymore.

Both computers are using XP and are hooked up to a router that connects to the Internet. When I run the networking wizard, each computer independantly recoginizes the workgroup, but doesn't see the other computer. The internet connection is live on both machines.

I'm semi-tech literate, and set up the network in th first place, so I can't figure out what's wrong. Any ideas?

PS--On another note, I backed up my quicken files before I wiped the drive, but now I can't get quicken to "validate" the data. So, that really sucks, too. If there are any quicken or data recovery experts out there, let me know if there's something I might be able to do with this problem, too.

Oh yeah, you have to set up the networking in the security settings.

Go into my computer, right click on your "C:" drive, go to Properties, security and it should say "I wish to share the root of this drive" or something like that. It will install some components and ask you to insert a disk. I'm not sure if the disk is necessary but it will copy a file to the disk and you take it to any other machines on your network and do the same thing, it will do something with the file that your original disk copied.

Of couse this is only for workgroup, if you run a domain it will be totally different.

Client for Microsoft networks (probably installed by the network wizard) and Printer and File sharing (probably installed by Ryan's suggestion) should both be installed. To check right click and choose properties on the My Network Places icon, then right click and choose properties on the network connection. Both components should be in the list. Once these software components are installed it may take a little while for the other PC to show up.

Thanks, guys. I'm getting closer. Now, my computer can see my wife's, but I either don't have permission to access it, or the network path isn't there (it says both things in the same error message when I try to click on the icon for her computer). Unfortunately, it's telling me to see my administrator...It's unfortunate because I'm the administrator...

Hey Pariah. Make sure there is an account for both of you on both computers. Use the same username and password on both computers.

It's the new "friend" story. As in, "hey doc, I've got this 'friend' who's crotch really itches and it burns when he pees. What should 'he' do?"
