The 129th edition of the Boston Marathon gets underway on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Coinciding with the 250th celebration of Patriots Day, the 2025 Boston Marathon welcomes record numbers to the race's storied history.
More than 36,000 runners submitted qualifying times for the 26.2-mile race, but event organizers offered entry to only 24,069 athletes. Just over 22,000 runners qualified for the event in 2024.
The race's cutoff time is also higher in 2025, meaning athletes had to run 6 minutes, 51 seconds faster than their age group's qualifying time to earn a spot in the race.
Despite those obstacles, 12 Wilmington-area runners will take to the historic streets of Boston to compete in the event on Monday. Last year, 26 area athletes completed the event, with Wilmington's Mason Holt earning the best time of 2 hours, 49 minutes, 40 seconds.
