Here’s a look at the top matchups on deck this week for high school baseball and softball teams in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties.
Gaston Christian’s only blemish this season was an 11-1 drubbing at the hand of Metrolina Christian on March 11. The Eagles have an opportunity to score a measure of revenge Tuesday in a key NCISAA Metrolina Athletic Conference (MAC) matchup.
Gaston Christian is averaging 10 runs per game. Four of its batters with 30 or more at bats are hitting .400 or better. The Eagles hope to have better luck this time against a Metrolina Christian pitching staff which collectively has a 0.98 ERA.
KEEP ON CHOPPIN': East Gaston softball trusted the process. Now, the Warriors are reaping the benefits
IT'S IN THE RECIPE: Burns baseball keeps on winning. What ingredients are most key to its sustained success?
Suddenly, this one has major Big South 3A and NCHSAA 3A state playoff implications.
South Point comes in on the heels of a three-game losing skid, which included a pair of walk off losses to Crest and Kings Mountain. The Red Raiders were also down 2-0 to the Mountaineers before a torrential downpour postponed the game to April 28.
South Point is tied with North Gaston in Big South 3A with a 6-3 record. It also missed a golden opportunity last week, the Wildcats letting a two-run lead slip late in an eight-inning loss at Crest.
East Gaston has run roughshod on much of its competition, upping its win streak to eight following two wins over Thomas Jefferson, as well as a dominant 13-3 victory over Catawba Shores 1A/2A leader Lincoln Charter. One team which got the better of the Warriors, however, is South Point, which left Mount Holly with a 12-7 win March 6.
East Gaston has already assured itself of a 2A playoff spot, earning a share of the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A title. South Point has work to do, ranked 26th according to the NCHSAA 3A West RPI.
