What do you think of a Colt McCoy for Kevin Kolb trade? As we get closer to the draft, there will be serious discussion of it.

LOL I had a post earlier this week saying I'd trade Kolb straight up for Colt McCoy.
Of course most here know I'm a huge University of Texas homer. Heck it took me 1,274 posts last year to convince the Cards to draft Sam Acho. Saved the entire 2011 draft.

Sorry, I missed it. It is an interesting scenario to me. I really think both QBs would be a better fit on the other's team and with the other's system. You don't see it these days, but in the past there were straight up trades of 2 teams starting qbs.
I wonder if the Cards would have the interest if making the call to Cleveland. I hope one of them make the call by draft time.
It was really interesting in 2008 and 2009 when I'd tell people I got to watch the same game both Saturday and Sunday. I posted several times that McCoy was the perfect replacement for Warner because he played in the same situation at Texas. No running game, inconsistent defense, mediocre offensive line and threw the ball all the time in a passing offense based on timing and a quick release and completed a very high % of his passes. Irritated me no end that Cleveland took him right before us in the 3rd round.
Andre Roberts is a decent player but I'd rather have McCoy and DRC and our 2nd round pick next April.
Pure conjecture on my part but it's possible McCoy wants out of Cleveland anyway. The whole concussion incident with the medical staff and how they handled it was not taken very well, especially by his family. I'm not making any kind of case for a trade for him, just expressing my opinion.

That is beyond ridiculous.
Have you ever seen McCoy play? Want to tell me in what game Max Hall could have completed 70% of his passes which McCoy did in back to back games last season and four times in only 2 seasons in the NFL?
Hall was horrendous. 1TD to 6 interceptions and was sacked 14 times in only 78 pass attempts. Hall has a career QB rating of 35.7. Nobody in the NFL today is even close to being as bad an NFL QB as Max Hall.

Colt McCoy has a noodle arm. That's enough for me to know that he will never be anything more than a average NFL QB.
So did Kurt Warner. Or do you forget watching Kurt have to rock back and heave the ball to get it to go more than 20 yards down field? The only reason Warner ever completed a pass that traveled more than 20 yards in the air is that Fitzgerald would out jump the defenders to grab the rainbows Warner was throwing.

Yeah, but not many QBs in NFL history have Warner's combination of intangibles, vision and accuracy to make up for their lack of arm strength so I don't think he is a great example.

They're remarkably similar players. Weak arms, both run around too much, both have had concussions... Colt is cheaper though. If you're going to have a bum at QB might as well save some money.
In all seriousness though, Colt is pretty lousy. I feel the same about Kolb but I have no interest in the Cards investing more seasons in a lousy QB.

I think it may be a bit premature to call Colt horrible or lousy at this point. He's saddled with horrendous offensive weapons and has played Baltimore and Pittsburgh in about 25 percent of games started. Has also played a pretty good Cincy D twice, and very good SF and Hou Ds this year and very good Jets D last year. Thats about half of his starts against top 5 defenses with a craptastic supporting cast. He doesn't have the strongest arm in the world, for sure, but to completely write him off at this early stage of his career would be a mistake.
At UT his intangibles, leadership, intelligence, and accuracy were off the charts. A few years ago they had a formula floating around that tried to project a college QBs potential as a NFL QB. The components were something like games started in college and comp. per. McCoy's numbers were some of the higher ones ever. I'll see if I can dig it up, and obviously it isnt guaranteed, but it was still one of the more historically accurate formula.

Time for me to 'fess up to a negative bias about McCoy.
"Colt McCoy." (the name comes right out of Central Casting). From the day he first set foot on the Longhorn practice field, I (rightly or wrongly) felt he was being overhyped by an ambitious "football" family and then the Texas PR machine to become the second coming of Johnny Unitas (The only thing missing from this picture being that he wasn't drafted or signed by Jerry Jones).
At the very least, he still has a lot to prove. (Maybe he will, and make many naysayers like me look like fools).
But at least for now, I'm still not buying.

Not sure about him being overhyped, especially coming out of HS and his first year or two at UT. He was a 3 star recruit coming out of HS, and not many expected him to win the a starting job at UT, most thought it would be Jevan Snead who was a much ballyhoo'd 4 star recruit, that would take over for VY when he graduated. But McCoy won the job as a freshman and Snead transferred. As far as his name, don't have much to say other than its his name *shrug*.

I think he's a good QB with potential and a more than adequate replacement for 2011 Kevin Kolb. But that doesn't tell us much about who will actually be better in 2012.
All the same things that Colt McCoy has. Let Colt play with wide receivers like Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt or Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin and we'll see,
I could just as easily say that Warner wasn't any good unless he had the perfect combination of great offensive coaches and outstanding duos at Wide Receiver as you can claim McCoy isn't any good.

McCoy actually reminds me quite a bit of Brees, maybe not as good of an arm. Would have been a little optimistic to expect Brees production, but given the right circumstances, think he could put up similar numbers. If you look at Bree first few years in the leagu he put up numbers pretty close to McCoys
