If Vin Baker is not cleared by the NBA doctor to play by Thursday, the Celtics will get out of two year more years at $30.4 million (not to mention what is left of his $12.98 million contract for this year. By this weekend, Vin Baker could be unemployed.

Would he be worth the veteran minimum? Assuming he has his alcohol problem under control (a huge if), he has a lot of talent. Is he too much of problem to bother with?

Vinny has a series of great games, but them his personal life gets screwed up. So, I'd have to say NO.

I admit it struck me as a doubtful idea. I guess after watching the Suns get killed inside night after night, I'm just looking for something.

It was only a couple of years ago that the Celtics thought Baker was worth $15 million. I can really understand why they would want out from under that stupid contract. It was almost impossible for him to live up to that contract even without his other problems.

My guess is that Baker will end up with someone if he is a total free agent. Best bet is that he will go to Dallas.

NY Post: Baker on Front Burner

Baker on front burner

By FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

NEW ORLEANS - Vin Baker's contract could be terminated by the Boston Celtics tomorrow, which would clear the way for the Knicks to possibly sign the troubled power forward.
Baker has told at least two NBA players that his goal would be to join the Knicks if he is released by the Celtics. The Knicks have refused to comment on Baker's status. The 6-10 forward is a low-post scoring presence the Knicks covet, but his troubles off the court make him a risky investment.

Baker, who is a recovering alcoholic, was suspended indefinitely by the Celtics on Jan. 23 for violating his aftercare program. Baker and the Celtics reached an agreement over the summer that only a doctor overseeing Baker's care, approved by the team and player, can determine if Baker is ready to return. The agreement also said that if Baker wasn't back within 10 games, the Celtics had the right to terminate his contract. Baker is scheduled to make $35 million over the next 2-1/2 years.
