High school basketball: Barton carries LaFargeville girls into state semifinals against Chateaugay

Mar. 16—DRYDEN — A championship-caliber performance by Emeline Barton sent the LaFargeville girls basketball team into their first state semifinal with a 56-47 Class D quarterfinal victory over South Kortright/Andes of Section 4 on Saturday afternoon at Tompkins-Cortland Community College.

Barton, a senior, scored 33 points for the Red Knights (20-2). She went 11-for-20 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the foul line. She also grabbed six rebounds, made eight steals and provided three assists.

Ella Porter finished with nine points for LaFargeville, and Elyza Smith grabbed nine rebounds and scored six points. The Red Knights trailed 22-21 to the Rams at halftime, but won the decisive third quarter 17-10.

LaFargeville will play in an all-north country state semifinal at 2:30 p.m. Thursday against Section 10's Chateaugay at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. Chateaugay (24-1) defeated Section 7's Schroon Lake, 49-24, to reach the semifinals.

The semifinal winner advances to the state Class D championship game, slated for 6 p.m. Friday at Hudson Valley CC.

In other state quarterfinal games Saturday, Section 10's Lisbon lost to Section 2's Stillwater 49-45 in a Class C girls quarterfinal at SUNY Potsdam in Potsdam. Section 10's Harrisville fell to Section 2's Loudonville Christian, 38-36, at Hudson Valley CC.

In Class A, Albany Academy defeated Malone 63-39 in a girls quarterfinal.
