It appears anybody who has bought music from Microsoft's store will lose the ability to play it if they upgrade their pc, or recover from backup or ....

This shows one reason why I hate DRM so much, I upgrade my PC every 2 years or so and this would leave me SOL.

What's funny is.. that's the kind of thing that pushes people to pirate music.

Why would I pay for content with all these restrictions when I can just download it for free from P2P or Usenet? It's not that people don't want to support artists, they just want to be able to put music on their laptop, I-Pod, MP3 Player, etc and be able to play it when and where they want.

Stuff like this is just ridiculous. They're doing nothing but shooting themselves in the foot.

I always said that if I were a popular artist, I would have a page or something where people could Paypal me a few bucks.

There are a few artists I would kick some cash to, since I have acquired their music.

I won't download music from pirates, that is wrong but I have always refused anything downloaded with DRM.

I can't imagine how irate the poor buggers who bought from them are.

I'm kinda in between..

I'm a musician myself, I don't do it for a living, but I understand what it's like to create something and how personal it can be to an artist. I do download music, but I usually download 2-3 tracks from a CD to see if I like it first. For the last few years, I have had horrible luck where I hear a song I really like, pay $14 for the CD, bring it home, and guess what? That one song is the only one I like.

I put the bar at 3 songs. If I like 3 songs on the CD, I buy it. I'm still a thief I guess, but I support the bands I like.

If you are one of the handful of people who actually bought tracks from MSN Music, you can still burn the songs to a CD then rip that CD back to your computer as unprotected MP3s. A bit of a pain, but at least that way the user isn't locked out of the content.

Yeah, I bought a CD online and had to do that exact thing. I never even thought of that, I googled around and found out you could do that. For that much hassle, it's easier to just buy the CD in a store. Kinda defeats the convenience of buying music online.

You sure about that, it seems like a huge hole in their DRM ?

I would have thought you have to use their player to access the tracks and I'll bet that payer doesn't permit burning

In Microsoft's letter to their MSN Music customers they even recommended that users back up their music by putting them on CDs. You can absolutely burn them onto a CD then rip them back unprotected.
