Starting on the road is a little surprising.

That doesn't make sense.
It's fine if its going to happen, but dumb to do so in the middle of the season.

Oh ok, but still I would expect that sort of decision to be made after the season and not in the middle.

I wonder if Edge is going to cause problems about this.

If we know Edge, he probably will.

Well at least we can see if Hightower is the real deal.(Hopefully)
Made this next game all the more interesting.

I think Edge brings more to the team than yards (which is a good thing) not worth pissing him off now.

Timmy as a starter, if he plays like he has done on limited downs then fine, but i think it risky game to play.

just an opinion like

Wow. Very interesting.

Don't understand the Edge comment though. That has to be Adam speculating.

That isnt what Schefter said. Can a mod rename this thread?

http://blogs.nfl.com/2008/10/28/hightower-could-push-james-out-of-arizona/

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt did not dismiss the idea that, while rookie running back Tim Hightower’s playing time will increase, veteran Edgerrin James‘ will decrease.

“I think we’ve shown we’re going to go with the players that give us the best chance to win,” Whisenhunt said. “We did that with the quarterback, we did that at linebacker, we did that with the offensive line. So if we feel Tim gives us the best chance to win, then absolutely.”

But this is the smaller issue compared to the more significant one. While James now is expected to lose some carries the rest of this season, he well could be losing his job in Arizona after this season.

James is scheduled to make $5 million in base salary next year. It is difficult to imagine the Cardinals — or any team for that matter — paying a veteran, whose carries are dropping, that much money for a given season. There are starting running backs who do not make $5 million in base salary.

Now if James is married to the idea of playing in Arizona –- and this is a bit difficult to imagine considering his love of south Florida -– then the two sides might be able to craft some type of compromise that would enable him to finish his career in the desert. But if not, James could be moving on next season, though this past off-season provided proof of how challenging it can be for veteran running backs to find work.

Former NFL MVP Shaun Alexander missed all of training camp and did not land a job with Washington until long after this season had started. It will be interesting to see where James winds up next season. But based on the way events are going this season, it doesn’t look like Arizona.

If Hightower was, or is, going to start against the Rams, there's no way Schefter would scoop Urban and Somers.

The pundit's never ending attempt to "predict" the future. A mixture of the obvious, some guess-work, and a whole lot of stir the pot...

just to jerk this thread in a little different direction:

take Edge's salary next season -- add it to Boldin's current cap hit -- and you get an annual cap hit that looks alot like the deals signed by TO and Roy Williams.

In effect, and all other things being equal -- replacing Edge with a rookie next year allows the team to pay Boldin what he is worth cap wise

What is the starter? Out of respect I fully believe Edge will be introduced and "start" every game.
It doesn't mean he'll get most carries.

when Urban starts asking "if" Hightower becomes a starter... the demotion of Edge can't be that far away.

If James fumbles on one more key drive than let Hightower get a chance to start next game kid has amazing potential. Since when did James turn into a fumble prone hb he hardly ever fumbled for the colts :(

In this week's podcast, Darren Urban has an interesting observation. He was in the pressbox which is located in the endzone at FedEx Field and could plainly see Edge leaving yards on the field, e.g., getting 12-15 yards when other runners would have gotten 25-30 yards or more. Basically Edge is what he is, a stretch run guy who gets short yardage, rarely actually loses yardage, but has no burst, and could not take advantage of the opportunities presented by the Redskins defense in week three.

Long story short, he fit the Indy mode and the Denny Green mode, but really doesn't fit what Whis and the new coaching staff are trying to do, especially at $5-million per year. That's not just my opinion, but what was expressed by Urban and Bill Lewis in this week's Cardinal podcast. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Edge's role in the offense will decline over time as Tim Hightower and J.J. Arrington get more reps. But he'll still be a critical component of the offense in certain situations. And he could still contribute if the Cardinals reach the playoffs IMO.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about.
