If there was one made and they put a lot of work into a movie like this, it could be one of the greatest sellers of all time. I just read "Night" by Elie Wiesel and it was a VERY good and addictive book. Maybe they could turn the book into a movie, but either way, I think a Holocaust movie would be a HUGE hit. Not many people understand what really happened during those times and it would give them an idea of how bad it was.

Opinions?

***EDIT: I dont want anyone to get the impression that I am a holocaust supporter or something I just think it would be an interesting movie

The Diary of Anne Frank was made numerious times, my first stop in Europe will be the Ann Frank museum, and then Westerborg. There are others that were made, Schindlers List was good. But I honsestly think people do not want to over do it, it was mass genocide of people that are still living today.

Schindler's List and the Pianist were remarkable movies.

I haven't read "Night" though.

I remember watching the Holocaust miniseries in the late 70s and being mesmerized by it. It won a lot of awards and had a lot of good actors in it. You could probably check it out from the public library.

I've never read "Night". I've committed myself to reading two books this summer, if I get time for a third, I'll check this one out.

I've always been intrigued by World War II but especially by the Holocaust. I was just thinking about this the other day. The part of the Holocaust that has always puzzled me is how they found so many people willing to commit these horrors. I was thinking that although I'm sure it wouldn't be a huge box office success it would be very interesting to see a movie that showed the Holocaust through the eyes of a German soldier who is having trouble rationalizing the killings.

I suppose we have already seen some of this in Schindler's List when Schindler is trying to convince the German officer (Seth?) that it is a greater display of his power to show mercy instead of just brutal ruthlessness.

The Grey Zone might have been the most depressing movie I've ever seen. I felt like a rolling my wheelchair into a pond after that one.

"Night" talked about Auschwitz too, as well as many other concentration camps. It just crazy about the stuff that goes in there.

It is not crazy, it is incomprehendable that humans can actually cause genocide against other humans, and that is why it fascinates me, because to me learning about it and finding out what truley happened will make you a better person to your self and others. You can make a movie all you want, but reading real accounts will IMO do more for you. I am going to school to be a history teacher and before I start teaching I will have gone to the Westerbork Concentration Camp and Ann Franks house. I was told by a old history teacher that being there in a camp gives yu felling within your body that is unreal and you value life so much more. I have to experience it.

There was an excellent Twilight Zone episode about this from way back when that you should check out.

Side note - I had a next door neighbor in high school that actually believed his dad when his dad told him that the Holocaust was made up, never happened. Disgusting. His dad was in the Hitler youth or something. Disgusting.

The Pianist was so good that my wife and I agreed to stop watching it halfway through to save us from the terrible suffering shown in the movie.

You never finished it?

How do you know what was even shown if you didn't finish it?

We chickened out. I knew it would be well done, but too painful to watch.

Its like I always said, along the same lines, an epic movie about the life of Hitler would make a fortune. To go from living on the streets to becoming the dictator of a foriegn country is astounding.

But I agree a holocaust blockbuster would net a small fortune. But as another poster said. A lot of them are still alive.

Problem with the hitler movie is no one will support one. They made a great made for tv movie on his early life. There werent even commercials in between segments. No one would sponser it.

Been increasingly lauded as the best film about Hitler ever made.

I don't know how historically accurate "Max" was, but it was pretty interesting about a young Adolf Hitler.

Jakob the Liar is another good movie on the subject. Starring Robin Williams, one of his earliest dramatic roles I think.

Actually, Jakob the Liar was made in 1999, so it wasn't an early dramatic role. But still, the movie just wasn't that good. It had an eerie feel to it, which was good for the movie, but it wasn't that interesting and certainly nothing compared to a lot of the other holocaust movies out there.

Another one I would suggest wholeheartedly is Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni--he was a genius by making a comedy out of such a horrid subject, and doing it tastefully.

Forgive me if this has been said (I haven't read much past the first post), but there are lots and lots of movies about Nazi-Germany and the Holocaust. It's not exactly untapped material.

Not many people understand what really happened during those times and it would give them an idea of how bad it was.
I'm not trying to pick on you or anything, but just because YOU hadn't read about or studied the horrific tragedy the Jewish people endured and the strength of character they displayed doesn't mean "not many people" understand it. (I guess "understand it" is a subjective term. I don't pretend to understand the depths of survivor suffering, but I do know about what happened in Germany during that time...I think most adults probably do).

And I'm sure there's still a lot of survivors and descendants of those killed that probably wouldn't particularly want to see a movie about the Holocaust. You always have to take into consideration an audience, and unless it's geared toward a more artsy crowd, a Holocaust movie just isn't going to have mass appeal, and thus will never be a huge hit.

I can't believe I forgot about "Life Is Beautiful". It's one of my favorite movies. Benigni annoyed the hell out of me for about the first 20 minutes, but once I got used to him the movie was fantastic.

I don't think people making movies about the Holocaust are really looking for a big box office hit. That might be a nice bonus, but usually they are looking first to tell a story or make a point.
