Stoudemire set to return Says he's 80 percent sure he'll play Thursday

Suns forward Amaré Stoudemire could be back in action as quickly as Thursday night.

The All-Star big man, out since left knee surgery in October, said the chances were “80-20” that he’d play Thursday night when the Suns host the Portland Trail Blazers at U.S. Airways Center.

Stoudemire said today was the best he’d felt since the microfracture surgery and that, barring any swelling in his recently troublesome right knee on Thursday morning, he was hopeful that he’d be on the court vs. the Trail Blazers.

“If I wake up feeling good tomorrow, then it’s possible I’ll play,’’ Stoudemire said. “I tell you what, it’s been a long process, it’s been a long time coming. I just can’t wait to step foot back on that Phoenix logo.”

Coach Mike D’Antoni said Stoudemire would play when he’s ready to play, deflecting questions on the specifics of Thursday night.

10 minutes, push some guys around, sink some 18-footers, grab a couple rebounds. That'd be a perfect return. I'm not expecting the real Amare until sometime next season.

i dont expect ratlift but i think he will put the fear of god (amare) back into zack. remember this is the guy he dropped 50 on :D it also helps that zack's feet are just about nailed to the floor in how good his movement is.

This is for real? 15-20mins is great. When Shaq returned from his injury, he didn't even start for the first few games.

I keep thinking about Chris Webber coming back too early and looking more like he was playing on Bill Walton's knees. It wasn't pretty. It was a Sacramento horror story for about 60 games.

As I recall, though, he still averaged about 18/9.

You forgot to add: "...and it was a much worse injury."

Official release from Suns.com:

Amaré Stoudemire Activated
Posted: March 22, 2006
The Phoenix Suns have activated forward/center Amaré Stoudemire.

Stoudemire has been inactive for the team’s first 66 games after undergoing surgery to repair a joint surface defect in his left knee on October 11, 2005.

The Suns (45-21) own the league’s fourth-best record despite the absence of the 23-year-old, who was the only NBA player ranked in the top 10 in points (26.0, 5th) and field goal percentage (.559, 2nd) last season.

The 6-10, 245-pound forward/center has not appeared in a game since June 1, 2005 when the Suns were defeated 4-1 in the 2005 Western Conference Finals vs. the eventual NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs.

Phoenix hosts the Portland Trail Blazers (20-47) at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the US Airways Center. The game will be televised locally on FSN Arizona.

The good news is Amare's first game is against Portland and not one of those winning teams!

I would love to know what was said in the Amare, JC meeting last week. Amare has done a total 180 every since they spoke.

I think it was the horse head in the bed thing that suddenly got Amare going. Either that, or JC said Brandy called and wants to see Amare play! ;)

I can't wait until he just throws down on someone's head and I fly up out my chair screaming...

I hope he plays!
