but nothing's official yet, right?

Nope, the NFL rules committee is going to be voting on this soon. Edge can't wear #5 because of current rules

NFL is exploring a rule change, but I think there will be lots of pressure for popular players to keep their existing number. Plus, it probably won't be in effect until next season.

No way in heck that the NFL will sell thousands of James jerseys and then change the number. No way.

To the NFL.. This is an argument FOR changing the rule, not one against it.

Bah, I will hate it if this rule passes. The current number system prevents the numerical chaos we see in college ball. It will also be much harder to figure out who's who and what their responsibilities are on the field.

The rule has to be recommended by the competition committee to the owners. Next, 24 out of 32 owners need to approve the change.

I don't think it gets passed. Owners will see this as number changing mayhem. Further, even if passed, each team will continue to have final decisions over number changes.

What about the thousands of people who bought Bush #5 jerseys? Isn't that the reason for the rule change?

EDIT: Owners will see this as jersey selling mayhem.

It will happen. Count on it. I don't like it either, but it gives people reason to shell out more dough for new jerseys.

Well those people were just plain dumb to go out and buy a jersey prior to the official announcement of a number. You didn't see people going out and buying Leinart #11 did you? Cardinals quickly steered Matt to selecting an appropriate number that no other player had.

You'll notice that, at the NFL Shop, the Bush jersey is in limbo, while Leinart and Young are for sale and shipping.

For every dollar they will make more from a number change, they'll turn around and lose as they throw away the 1,000s of pre-made jerseys that are no longer correct.

Further, you have one pissed off supply chain with lots of outdated products. Seems like lot of money lost just so some dude can have a college number. The system has been in place for years, I don't see them bending over for Reggie.

That's my opinion, at least.

Latest I heard on the radio is that the earliest the change could happen is the 2007 season --

and Reggie Bush has now showed up in Saints minicamp in a new #25 jersey -- replacing the #5 he had worn earlier
