Listening to 98.7 they brought up a good point.

With the risk of no college season or even an abbreviated one, how many college players might opt for the supplemental draft.

I know there is no way of knowing who will chose to do that but in your opinion do you have a short list of players that would be considered a must?

Can you opt in? I thought you could only gain eligibility by mating certain criteria?

Either way I imagine Travis Ettiene and the like aren't too happy right now

Excellent question if a lot of college players declare and are actually taken it will surely delete the available talent for next years draft we are in uncharted territory here and hopefully there is a plan in place for such a issue

It will also correspondingly lessen the number of draft picks. For a team that expects to make a big leap (as I would expect the cardinals to do) if there are high quality players that enter (like etienne) it may be worthwhile to make the picks in the supplemental draft bc our slot would be 8 whereas it would likely be lower in the 2021 draft.

Makes sense to me. Although, that's one surefire way to cut your career short if you don't get picked. It's my understanding you can't go back to the NCAA after declaring. I don't know if that's changed though.

I'm sure the NCAA has to have something in the works about additional eligibility. It wouldn't be fair to these kids otherwise. I would basically lay out two options: an additional year of eligibility even if this year is shortened, but you've also still accrued a year if you want to declare for the draft (ie. Trevor Lawrence).

Related the Cards used supplemental draft before ie. Rosenbach and last year if I'm correct on 1 of the Thompsons please can anyone refresh I think 1 was also used to select Kelly Stouffer wayback when but I may be wrong bout that one

I think because of the bizarre responses I got to my article about this topic, monitors chose to delete the thread. I want to repeat a couple of key points that I expect.
1 No college or high school season (though spring college games possible if vaccine).
2 2021 draft will happen, but imagine where Joe Burrow would have been drafted without his senior year.
3 Likely fewer rounds.
4 Most kids who can afford it will wait for 2021 college year
5 NCAA has granted another year of eligibility.
6 Honestly I didn’t think about the supplemental, but much depends on what the NFL & colleges agree upon for eligibility. They will work together.
I expect this may get amended but here’s the current process
“To be eligible for the draft, players must have been out of high school for at least three years and must have used up their college eligibility before the start of the next college football season. Underclassmen and players who have graduated before using all their college eligibility may request the league’s approval to enter the draft early.

Players are draft-eligible only in the year after the end of their college eligibility.

Before the draft, NFL Player Personnel staff members confirm the eligibility of draft prospects; that means researching the college backgrounds of approximately 3,000 college players each year. They work with NCAA compliance departments at schools across the country to verify the information for all prospects. They also check the rosters of college all-star games to make sure that only draft-eligible players play in the games.

The Player Personnel staff also review all of the applications submitted by players who want to enter the draft early. Underclassmen have until seven days following the NCAA National Championship Game to declare their intentions to do so. For the 2017 NFL Draft, 106 undergraduates received NFL approval to enter the draft, as did 13 players who graduated without using up all their college eligibility.

Once players have become draft-eligible or have declared their intention to enter the draft early, the Player Personnel staff work with teams, agents and schools to clarify the players’ status. They also work with agents, schools, scouts and teams to enforce league rules for Pro Days (where NFL scouts come to colleges to observe prospects) and private workouts.”

I’ll forego my hibernation to try to get you some names. Keep in mind we don’t even know if there’s a season. The NFLPA will have to agree to salary structures. What will be the roster limits? How about the cap? What do you really know about the guys you just drafted? It’s quite possible there’s no supplemental. I’ll see what I can do.

I think this may be the most likely possibility, no supplemental draft. It makes for a clean and easy way to forgo the complications of trying to hold one both for the NFL and the NCAA.

Who are these guys? They’re mostly juniors and a few sophomores who I think would get approved. If they have a supplemental I think any junior that asks gets approved. I put where I think they’d draw a pick at that round, but all could have gone round one if there had been a season in which they did great. What would the NFL do with them, no camp, no Combine, few if any preseason games, and no cap money. Would they do 5 year contracts? No easy answers. Sad for the players.

Devonta Smith WR AL - Might be better than Jeudy or Ruggs numbers say

Jamie Newman QB WF - Would have gone round 3 in 2020.

Paulson Adebo CB Stan - Good 2018, weak 2019 wants out 4th round tops

Pat Freiermuth TE PSU - Top rated TE in 2019 by most evals

Alex Leatherwood OT AL - Most had him round 1 if he have come out

Liam Eichenberg OL ND - Needs polish but safe round 2-3

Trey Smith OL TN - Moves to G, mean to the bone.

Creed Humphrey C OK - Ready to play quickly, Murray’s guy

Walker Little OT Stan - would have gone late 1 in 2020

Marvin Williams DT FSU - like round 3 level

Hamsah Nasirildeen S FSU - late 1 maybe, but more likely gets a 2

Rashod Bateman WR Minn - ditto, personal favorite for Cards

Travis Etienne RB, Clem - Likely a 1

Great job Harry. If this situation comes about I would like to think we go after one of these guys.
1. It adds talent taking advantage of another year with Kyler.
2. With a chance of abbreviated college season rankings won’t change that much unless there’s an injury.
3. Devonta Smith would fit nicely.
4. How about Humphrey the center?
5. Etienne might be a thought.

If the Cardinals want to fix the TE position, here is the guy they should grab.

If they have a supplemental draft and those players actually declare then I would definitely Not be opposed to taking some with later round draft picks think about it 1st round talent available for a 5th or 6th round pick sounds like a winner to me

We did this last year: Supplemental 5th for Jalen Thompson.

These are all players who in a normal year might hope to grow into round 1 selections. These guys have at least a great amount of talent. Some are already polished but stayed in school hoping to move up in the pool of that position, thus earning millions more.

Another question for you salary cap guru's. Is there draft spot still slotted? If so how is the actual spot determined?

The supplemental draft is a bidding game.

In 2019, we bid a 5th round pick in the 2020 draft for Jalen Thompson and as there were no higher bids we got him. It was generally accepted that he, in fact, had a 2nd, early third-round value.

Under the cap, he was slotted as a 5th round pick in 2019.

Current Contract

2019 $495,000 $85,730 $580,730
2020 $675,000 $85,730 $760,730
2021 $850,000 $85,730 $935,730
2022 $965,000 $85,730 $1,050,730

Total $2,985,000 $342,920 $3,327,920

The Athletic just took up this same question I took up in the deleted post I made about about colleges & high schools likely cancelling their seasons. Their sources indicated, “It is unclear whether the NFL would approve petitions from players without eligibility issues seeking to enter the supplemental draft, but agents and NFL executives alike expect more college players to try to find out.”. Traditionally this draft has happened in July, so we might have something to do then.
