INDIANAPOLIS — It has been nearly 20 years since Alexandria’s Jodi Howell and Susan Lester of Pendleton Heights earned the last roster spots for the IndyStar Indiana Girls All-Star team held by Madison County players.
It seems fitting that another Tiger and another Arabian ended that drought.
It was announced Friday by the Indianapolis Star that Jacklynn Hosier of Alexandria and Kaycie Warfel from Pendleton Heights are part of the 13-player roster that will play against Kentucky later this year.
Sean McDermott from Pendleton Heights was the last boys player named to the series in 2015. The boys rosters will be announced later this spring following the IHSAA tournament.
Hosier and Warfel completed their careers as the top two scorers in Madison County history with 2,108 and 2,107 points, respectively.
“I was a little bit surprised. I am super excited and blessed because not a lot of people get to do this,” Hosier said. “I’m really most excited that there are two Madison County kids. We are so often overlooked.”
Hosier led the Tigers to a 25-2 record, their first Central Indiana Conference and sectional titles in over 20 years and a top-five ranking this season. She averaged 25.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and was among the state leaders with 7.4 steals per contest.
After earning Small School All-State from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and First Team All-State from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association, she will continue her career at the Division I level next year at Vermont.
She also follows in the footsteps of her father — and Alexandria coach — Mickey Hosier, who was an Indiana All-Star in 1996.
“There is a lot of emotion, obviously.,” he said. “I think Jack’s career has been different because she didn’t get as much publicity until near the end.”
Warfel scored 23.3 points per game this season, and averaged 5.8 rebounds and 5.2 steals while shooting 37% from 3-point range and 71% at the foul line. Warfel will continue her career at Taylor University next year, rejoining her sister Whitney. She was named to the Senior Supreme 15 by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and, along with Hosier, took part in Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s Top-60 workout earlier in the week.
Mickey Hosier believes that the strong performances from both girls in front of All-Stars coaches Stacey Mitchell, Brian Satterfield, and Kristi Sigler at the Top 60 workout on Sunday may have made a difference.
“I went to the Top 60 Workout knowing there was a chance,” Warfel said. “Jack and I have had our great careers and achievements, and this is a great way for our careers to end.”
Like Hosier, Warfel also plays for a former Indiana All-Star in Pendleton Heights graduate Nick Rogers, who made the boys team 20 years ago.
“With it being the 20th anniversary, that was something we secretly talked about,” he said. “I’m over the moon for her. It’s been a goal for her for a long time. I know she’s extremely excited.”
Joining Warfel and Hosier on this year’s team are Laila Abdurraqib and Jaylah Lampley (Lawrence Central), Addi Baxter (Columbia City), Ella Bobe (South Knox), Addie Bowsman (Twin Lakes), Avery Gordon (Brownsburg), Kya Hurt (Lawrence North), Mya Makalusky (Hamilton Southeastern), Monique Mitchell (South Bend Washington), Meredith Tippner (Noblesville), and Brooke Winchester (Warsaw).
The All-Star teams from Indiana and Kentucky will play twice, Friday, June 6 at Lexington Catholic High School and Saturday, June 7 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, with the girls game followed by the boys game on both occasions.
Times have yet to be announced for the Lexington game. The Indianapolis twin-bill will start with the girls game at 5 p.m.
The Indiana Senior girls lead 55-41 in their series with Kentucky and 41-12 in games against the Indiana Junior girls. The Indiana Seniors will face the Indiana Juniors — including Laniah Wills of Lapel — June 4 at Greenfield-Central.
