Go Cardinals! Yay!!!
Finally, the horror film has returned.
I grew up on horror films from the 70's and 80's. It was right about the time I got to college that "Scream" reared its ugly head (not to say that Scream was a bad film) and suddenly every horror film had to be hip with a cast of WB rejects and a soundtrack by Limp Bizkit.
House of 1000 Corpses is an homage to the sick and twisted horror films of yesterday. Rob Zombie brings back honest-to-God evil villains. The antagonists in this film are the main attraction. It's their antics that keep your interest. The victims (or spam, as I refer to them as) are exactly that. There's no time for character development - they don't last long enough. What Rob Zombie has done is created a film where you're cheering for the bad guys. I guess that's just one more disturbing element in the film.
The effects are excellent. The makeup, costumes, and set design are all top-notch. All of the actors do an outstanding job. The music is great. The only problem I had was that a few times Rob seems to forget that this is a movie, not a music video. Some of the editing is redundant, as are some of the segways, but these are the flaws of a first-time director and the rest of the movie makes up for it.
I highly recommend this one to any horror fans out there but it's probably too brutal for mainstream audiences.
