I didn't even notice this headline the first couple times I went to ESPN today.

Rockets traded John Amaechi and Moochie Norris for Clarence Weatherspoon

Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Reserve forward Clarence Weatherspoon was traded Tuesday from the New York Knicks to the Houston Rockets for point guard Moochie Norris and center John Amaechi.

It was the first trade engineered by Isiah Thomas, coming just eight days after he took over for fired Knicks team president Scott Layden.

The Knicks had been in buyout talks with Weatherspoon, who is signed for two more seasons for $12.2 million. Instead, Thomas found a trading partner in the Rockets who have been in need of frontcourt depth ever since they suspended and then released forward Eddie Griffin.

Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy criticized his team Monday night after a loss to Seattle, pointing out the lack of rebounding as one of the team's main flaws.

"I'm just thinking about how we can get better. Obviously, we're not good enough," Van Gundy said.

Weatherspoon, an 11-year veteran, averaged at least five rebounds in every season before this one. He appeared in 15 games for the Knicks before being placed on the injured list shortly after Thomas was hired. He averaged 3.8 points and 3.3 rebounds.

In Norris, the Knicks are adding another point guard to a roster that already includes three -- newly installed starter Frank Williams and veterans Howard Eisley and Charlie Ward. Norris was the backup to Steve Francis in Houston, where he averaged 2.7 points and 1.6 assists this season.

Norris' career averages are 6.2 points and 3.5 assists for Houston, Seattle and Vancouver.

"It means added help. With the way Don (Chaney) wants to play, we want to give him the luxury of having different guys that can play a different tempo," Thomas said. "As we continue to shuffle and retool our roster, at some point in time we may have an overload at one spot."

Amaechi, acquired by the Rockets during the preseason for Glen Rice, has been on Houston's injured list all season. Although Amaechi has two more years remaining on his contract, the Knicks plan to waive him, Thomas said.

The Knicks made two other roster moves, placing forward Michael Sweetney (knee tendinitis) and backup center Michael Doleac (back spasms) on the injured list.

The Knicks also are considering signing forward Leon Smith of the CBA's Gary Steelheads.

Smith, who was at Madison Square Garden before Tuesday night's game against Miami, was the last first-round pick of the 1999 draft straight out of high school and was waived by the Dallas Mavericks. He played briefly for Knicks assistant Lon Kruger with the Atlanta Hawks.

"We looked at him and had a chance to talk to him, and later on down the road we'll probably revisit that," Thomas said.

Here is some more info about the Knicks, McDyess & players to be traded including Lampe.

Knee still a pain
in the neck for McDyess

By FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Antonio McDyess expressed concern yesterday that he is still experiencing pain and swelling in his surgically repaired left knee.
"The doctors keep telling me that it's normal and it's going to get better, but when," McDyess said. "It's frustrating because it doesn't seem to be going away."

When asked if he believes his condition will ever improve, McDyess replied: "I've been playing like this for a long time and nothing seems to change."

McDyess returned on Dec. 1 following a 14-month rehabilitation. He has appeared in 16 straight games but has struggled to rediscover his game and has been slowed by knee soreness. He had four points and six rebounds in 24 minutes last night.

"He'll have to be patient," Don Chaney said. "And we'll have to be patient."

Last week, McDyess sat the entire second half in a win over Atlanta and has since returned to his role as a backup.

"I think it has taken a lot of pressure off me," McDyess said of his role. "I'm not happy with the way I've played but I'm happy that we are winning."

McDyess will be a free agent this summer and his bargaining position is being compromised because of his knee injury. He also is a candidate to be traded because a lot of teams would be interested in trimming McDyess' $13 million salary off their cap this summer.

A person close to McDyess said the veteran forward believes he will be traded before the Feb. 20 deadline. Asked about his future, McDyess said, "anything is possible, I guess."

NEW SHERIFF'S RULES: The Knicks have clearly changed the way they do business. James Dolan's edict of fielding a team of strong character players seemed to go out the window when Isiah Thomas pursued Eddie Griffin, who is facing a felony assault charge.

Yesterday's three-player deal that Thomas struck with the Houston Rockets is something that the old regime never would have considered because former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy is now with the Rockets.

ROSTER SHUFFLE: To make room for Moochie Norris and John Amaechi, the Knicks placed rookie Mike Sweetney and Michael Doleac on the injured list. Both Sweetney and Doleac are prime candidates to be traded as is rookie Maciej Lampe, who missed last night's game with the flu.

Does anyone know the contract status of Charlie Ward? I remember reading there was some deadline where he could be waived and not have to pay a big escalation clause.

Reportedly NYK has a 2 mil. buy-out clause on Ward's contract till 10th January.

It seems to be very very likely that NYK will buy-out him and that could be one of the reasons of the Moochie-trade.

I'm just reporting what the NY Post article said. D. Miles has been injured a lot, but even so he was well regarded when he was with the Clips. He is 6'9" 210

2000-01 9.4 ppg 5.9 rpg 50.5% from the field
2001-02 9.5 ppg 5.5 rpg 48.1% from the field

Last year he missed 17 games and while his overall numbers were about the same, his shooting dropped to 4.1%. This year he is playing 30 minutes per game.

I'm guessing that with Kendrick Brown, Eric Williams, Jason Kapono, and Ira Newbie, the Cavs feel they can easily replace Miles numbers.

As long as they don't trade Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans they should be fine.
