Where Did The Name "Amen Corner" Come From?
Amen Corner was given its name by Sports Illustrated reporter Herbert Warren Wind in 1958. Wind wrote the following about a ceremony dedicating two bridges over Rae’s Creek to Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson: “On the afternoon before the start of the recent Masters golf tournament, a wonderfully evocative ceremony took place at the farthest reach of the Augusta National course – down in the Amen Corner where Rae’s Creek intersects the 13th fairway near the tee, then parallels the front edge of the green on the short 12th and finally swirls alongside the 11th green.”
Wind borrowed the moniker from song a 1933 jazz song called “Shoutin’ in That Amen Corner” by Andy Razaf and Danny Smalls. During the 1958 tournament, Arnold Palmer won the first of his four titles after a controversial call at hole 12, where he was allowed to drop a second ball rather play an embedded ball, resulting in a two-stroke difference that would help him win the tournament by one stroke.

In addition to the technical challenges the corner poses, creating high drama for both spectators and golfers, the incredible natural beauty of the stretch is also befitting of the name. The vibrant azalea bushes that surround the green at hole 12 and line the creek all the way to the hole on 13 are some of the most gorgeous blooms are often so dense and so vivid they seem fake. The two stone bridges that take players to the green at 12 and from the tee to the fairway at 13 are some of the most photographed places on the entire course. After seeing and experiencing the combined magic of the place, a word like “amen” certainly feels befitting.
