In my everlasting quest to find a qb for the Cardinals, I've just seen that David Carr will become a free agent at the end of the season. That surprised me as I thought Houston had him locked up for a longer contract. But his name was on the list posted here regarding free agents in 2006.

He has a strong arm is still young. Athough he has taken a tremendous pounding, he has not suffered any serious iinjuries.

Should the Cardinals even consider him?

The last I'd heard the Texans are planning on keeping him.

His name was on the list becuase he has a team option for I think 3 more years after this, but until they excercise that option he is considered a Free Agent next year.

If the team exercises that option Carr will get a bonus of 8 mill pro rated over the remaing years of the contract. Ownership has already been quoted as saying that they will without a doubt pick up his option. So as of right now he is not available.

If he were available, sure. But there's no way the Texans are letting him go.

SS:

If Houston gets the #1, expect a feeding frenzy by every team in the league that needs a potential franchise QB. The Texans think they've got their guy in Carr, and they'll be able to name their price for the pick, within reason.

They already said Carr is their man and his bonus is due before the draft. So if they give Carr that bonus they will be commited to him going into the draft. So with the #1 pick they will take an OT to finally protect their investment for once in the history of the team, or trade it away.

bring him in....he is used to running for his life. He will feel like he never left Houston.

We would be a vacation compared Houston.

They have allowed 17 more sacks then we have.

At least back it up, Stout.

Heck Yes I would take him. He is tough, has mobility, is a leader and can pass accurately.

I have been watching the guy play for the last 4 years and the guy is a very good QB. (My woman is a Texans fan)

He really has no offensive line in Texas. As we all know that effects your QB, and what he can do.

Give him a little more protection, Boldin and Fitz, and he would excell here.

In my eyes he would be the perfect fit....but the Texans will not let him go. If they do they are dumber than the Cardinals.

Yeah, David Carr is really going to go from one horrible offensive line to another.

I shall elaborate. We've already seen QB's that cannot pick up their game and elevate the team above a bad offensive line. I don't want another one. I HOPE our OL is fixed in the offseason, but that's probably overly optimistic, at least for the early portion of next season. I want to either get a guy who can OVERCOME obstacles and CARRY this team (hard to find, I know), or get a young guy to groom to be that guy. Carr, IMO, isn't it.

Looks like you all answered my question on Carr. Houston will exercise their option on retaining him. That means they would probably trade their pick if Leinart is still on the board as quite a few teams would trade up to get him.
I wonder if the Cards would be a bidder?

Do you know a lot of QB's that can "pick up their game and elevate the team above a bad offensive line" ?

Vick is the only 1 that i can think of.

Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Byron Leftwich, Mark Bulger, Brett Favre, Drew Bledsoe. Manning going on the O-line he had when he came into the league and STILL lifted the team. No, there aren't a ton out there, and never did I say it would come easy. I just think, before we start taking a look at other team's castoffs that did not excell in the same situation as we are likely to be in, we should try and do better. I don't want to settle. I want THE guy. Now the Cards just need to figure out how to make it happen.

Personally I think Leftwich sucks, and his oline is very very good. The rest I can agree with.

I think he holds the ball too long and fumbles too much but in general I think he'd look a lot better if he had more than 1 WR who consistently produced. I suspect they made the right call in benching first rounders Williams and Jones and playing Wilford more.

I think there's something to the idea that 36 year old Jimmy Smith is the only guy on that team with a decent YPC number, Leftwich still throws most balls on a line and I think that he has trouble with touch passes which tend to favor the bigger guys like Williams, Wilford and Jones. Apparently they benched Jones because he runs the wrong routes, misses blitz reads(unusual for a former QB) and because he keeps trying to catch the ball with one hand which apparently is leading to drops. What I read is DelRio still really likes him but has accepted he's just not ready to play that big of a role no matter how big and fast he is.

Two more additions:

Eli Manning is that kind of Qb as well. Remember the Giants offensive line that caught so much heat when Warner was the starter? One new starter and an Eli later and they're one of the Top 5 offenses in the NFL.

Folks in Pittsburgh were ready to go with Maddox and complained about their offensive line throughout the 2004 offseason and up until a guy named Ben Roethleiberger took over and their offense exploded.

I wouldn't say the Steelers offense exploded. Ben passing 14 times a game does not equal a great QB. He is in a great system with a great running game and OL. He is the lucky QB.

Wow. I would say 4/6 out of those guys actually have good units to work with.

I would agree. The Steelers are running WAY more and being far more sucessful with it than when they based their offense more around the pass with Maddox.

You can say it, but it doesn't make it so. Who?
You didn't hear Stout? No QBs in the NFL are any good, they just have good offensive lines and running games. It's totally impossible for a QB to raise the level of play of those around him.
