Think he'd be that better than Hoyer? Enough to warrant our surrendering players or picks?

My first thought would be if Bilichek would trade him awaymaybe theres a reason.

It would be eerily similiar to Reid letting Kolb go.

Some teams plan on their QB being hurt each year and they actually keep someone worthy around for those special occasions. Patriots are one of the best at this, they won't dish Mallet.

The definitely would if the price is right, dawg. And it wouldn't be because they don't like Mallett---they really do---it would be because they think Brady has 3-4 years left which would surpass Mallett's rookie contract.

I could see them trading Mallett and signing Matt Cassell to return as the backup.

Maybe, but as a master of the high, I will call this possibilty highly unlikely. :D

With Kolb at QB I fully expect our QB to get hurt.

With this line and Kolb's history, the odds go through the roof. He did surprise me this last season lasting the first (almost) six games and absorbing all them hits. But no way can we expect him to go 16 games straght right now, it would take a masterful OC and some good luck. We better upgrade at the back up QB posiion. :D

I would rather go after Flynn when Seattle lets him go.

We had a crack at him the first 3 rounds in the draft. Instead of drafting him, the cardinals thought that Ryan Williams and Rob Housler would be better. I am still waiting for the return.

That's exactly why I brought this up.

Has anyone seen him live in an NFL game? Other than being a 3rd round pick, has there been any subsequent evidence that he is a good NFL QB?

from my favorite site:

ESPN's John Clayton suggests the Browns could show trade interest in Patriots backup QB Ryan Mallett.
The Browns are in the market for both a new head coach and general manager. Until that's settled, we have no idea what the feelings will be on 2012 first-round pick Brandon Weeden. In four preseason appearances this season, Mallett completed 33-of-67 passes for 300 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He barely beat out Brian Hoyer for the right to hold Tom Brady's clipboard.

Pats spent a 3rd round pick on him. They would probably want at least a 2nd back for him. Is he worth that? Can we get something better for a 2nd?

Mike Glennon, Derek Anderson and Ryan Mallet. They're all the same to me.

Yep. I was leading the calls to take him in the 2nd or, at least, in the third. This board almost universally disagreed with me.

Housler was one of the few bright spots on offense this year IMO. 4th on the team in receiving yards (417) and tied for 3rd on receptions (45) and the only player with over 25 targets that caught at least 60% of them is pretty good for a backup TE on an offense that was horrible.

Still waiting on the return on Mallet as well. Outside of a Brady injury, the jury will probably be out on him for at least 2 more years.

When he was there in the third i was screaming at the T.V. for the Cardinals to draft him. That is when I knew the Cardinals were going to struggle at the QB position. There was no competition at that position. There still isn't any competition at that position or the o-line or the RB.
