How did this iteration of the Boston Celtics become NBA champions after rebuilding from their last era of contention, the Ubuntu-era Celtics that won it all under the trio of future Hall of Famers Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen? The Celtics had to move on from then-head coach Doc Rivers after Allen had left to the Miami Heat and Boston fizzled as a title contender, then hired now-President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens as their new head coach after dealing away their title core to the Brooklyn Nets.

The picks from that deal would net Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum, who would form the seed of the roster that would one day win Banner 18 in the 2024 NBA Finals. But there were many other names involved in the interim, and a few near-misses before that.
