How do you pronounce this one?

Don't let Nene hear you...... He's definately not a panzy. My guess is he'll be one of the future great players in the NBA. Since I spend the summers in Colorado, I have allways followed the Nuggets as wel as the Suns.

Most people pronouce it "Nay-Nay", but some announcers have said it "Na-nay" or "Nen-ay". I really don't understand why he dropped his last name Hilario. His first name is actually Maybyner so I can understand wanting to use a nickname. Still he may be one of the 1st NBA players to be known by a single name like Madonna or Cher.

over here in germany a lot of brazilian soccer players use nicknames on their jerseys, mostly because their real names
are often nearly the same.
Maybyner Hilario though is not a so common name in brazil but still he uses a
nickname -like said- most brazilians

Its common for Brazilians and he also did it for marketing reasons too...
Nene is one of my favourate players in the NBA, I was following him even before the draft..... Now with Barbosa Brazilians just seem to make great ball players. Can't wait to see Anderson, Tiago and that BYU guy on a non laker,non J-Kidd team

It is pronounced "neh-neh"..... by the way Nene in spanish means baby boy. So Ryanwb you are right, it is kinda panzy.

It is pronounced neh-neh, like in spanish and means baby as well. Brazilians often have nicknames that we would consider Panzy-ish. Barbosa is nicknamed Leandrinho, which means "Little Leandro" One of the great soccer players from the early 90's was named "Careca" which means bald. The story is that he had the nickname since he was a baby.
Most big brazilian sports stars go by their nickname alone. Just like Pele. Part of it is the fact that so many of them have similar names. It seems 1/4 of the country has the last name "da Silva."

In 2002, I was hoping the Suns would trade up for Nene. As it was, he went to the Knicks who gave him up for Dice. Bet they'd like that one back.

Hilario was my favorite guy in the 2002 draft as well. I was very disappointed when the New York Knicks took him, and I know many of us here on the message board could not believe they immediately traded him. To be honest I think if Hilario had played here instead of Denver last year HE would have been the ROY last year.
I'm very happy with Amare Stoudemire however.
