There’s no sense beating around the bush, Tyler Booker was drafted to be a starter for the Dallas Cowboys. The 6-foot-5, 321-pound guard from Alabama is a polished and poised prospect who immediately plugs into the right guard position recently vacated by Zack Martin.

A player Dane Brugler described as “built like a bull, with the play strength and finishing mentality to match,” Booker is a well-rounded interior player who will thrive in Klayton Adams’ run-heavy scheme. Notoriously regarded for his leadership and high IQ, Booker presents very little risk for a team determined to build a powerful interior.

While the initial depth chart may not reflect it, Booker will be a starting guard from Day 1. Guards are rarely drafted this early, so the expectations are extremely high for the young mauler. 100% of his snaps over the past two seasons came at left guard but since that spot is already occupied by Tyler Smith, right guard is the obvious destination.

T.J. Bass will likely be the primary reserve behind Smith at LG, making the RG reserve battle between Robert Jones, Saahdiq Charles and Brock Hoffman. Hoffman, a man with position flex between center and guard is the early favorite but Jones and Charles are clearly in the running.

Fans have been high on Hoffman since he started in Martin’s place last season but the Cowboys don’t appear to be quite as high. Even before adding Booker, they worked aggressively to add bodies to the competition.

Interior offensive line is now arguably the Cowboys deepest and most talented position group on the roster. The only wildcard here is if the offensive tackle play is so poor the Cowboys feel forced to move Tyler Smith from guard to left tackle. It would be moving Smith from his best position, but it would be pulling from a strength of the roster since Dallas now has the pieces in place to theoretically replace Smith should a major move transpire.
