How often do "franchise QBs" fall out of the top 5?

If Leftwich is the franchise player that many fans claim he is, what is your logic to support the idea that no one will either take him in the top 5 or trade into the top 5 to take him?

I like Leftwich a lot, so I'm not picking on the Leftwich supporters here......I just can't, for the life of me, think of a guy who went into the draft being touted as a franchise QB and then fell out of the top 5. If your arguments about Byron are true and he really is a franchise talent, history says someone will trade up with an indecisive team like the Bears or Bengals and snatch him.

That's what I think might happen why he won't be there for us. I've given my opinion on this but I think if he's there we either take him or we'll trade the pick to drop down for two picks. If we drop down we'll strill get Suggs (wishful thinking that he drops) and a DB. But then again, what do I know!

i'd really say anyone tapped in the first round is considered, at least by the team that drafts him, as a potential franchise qb. that said, lot's have been drafted outside the top 5.

I'm just saying that maybe some people here might be overrating him a little.

If he really honestly is a franchise QB, then someone's going to jump up and grab him. If that doesn't happen, then the league's personnel people must not be convinced about Byron for some reason.

That's good point.Didn't Carolina trade down to 4 or 5 and still get Kerry Collins? And he had more question marks than Leftwich.I still think the Bears are the team to watch with Leftwich.I don't care what they say publicly, they have to be looking at him.I almost hope someone does trade up in front of us and get him so i don't have to watch the Cards pass on him and ruin my whole draft.

I couldn't agree more about the Bears. They are full of crap, IMO. Leftwich is their guy no matter how many times they say they want a D-lineman.

But then again, I guess I can see their need for DL help......but they haven't had a real QB for 15 years, so I find it so hard to see them passing another in Leftwich.

Personally - all this Leftwhich talk will probably be moot as I suspect the Bears to be blowing smoke - have you noticed that apparently NO ONE is hot for Leftwhich - makes me think a lot of teams are blowing smoke, hoping he will fall in their laps - but what the hell else we gonna talk about right now - our stellar offseason?

Suggs and Leftwich both being gone would probably be best for all of our sanity.

Sorry Ed, but this logic has so many holes in it I can't comment on them all. I'll be brief. The Texans and the Lions don't NEED a QB. They're off the radar. The Lions will not trade their pick. The Texans may, but if they don't get the right trade offer they will not. The Bungles will likely take Palmer. That leaves only the Bears (who will either draft him or take another player, but NOT trade down) and the Cowgirls (Who profess not to want a QB and who probably will want the impact player-but who may trade down if the price is right) to nab Lefty in the top five.

So what if no teams are willing to deal, and Chicago sticks by its offseason guns of going defense, and the Girls take Newman? By your rationale, that means he is not a franchise QB. That's so elementary and simple that I know you didn't think it through enough. You're much smarter than that.

I'm not trying to be condescending, just give a little perspective here.

Simple Answer Ed

Very rarely.

Very rarely are there any circumstances when a franchise QB falls out of the top 5 picks. That's why we should take the franchise QB at 6 if he is there, because it is unlikely that we will have this opportunity next year.

I have always wondered the same thing about Suggs. If he is so awesome, why shouldn't we expect somebody will jump up to take him as well? The answer lies in the fact that most people here want Suggs so I think they trick themselves into believing Suggs will simply fall to #6 even though I have seen a couple here claim Suggs to be the top athlete in the draft. Not picking on Suggs mind you but I think Ed's theory still applies.

I agree and to do your thought one better, to really get us fired up, there is a slip-up in the Cards War Room and they accidentally select Brooks Barnard from Maryland.

What?
Wasn't one of Stewarts demands that the team that signed him wouldn't draft a QB? I know his options got cut real short at the end but, does anyone know if this stipulation is in his contract with the Bears? If so that could throw a new spin on things.

Pennington was very highly touted a few years back and dropped pretty much based on the fact he was from a small school. No one is dropping Leftwich out of their top 5. Some teams pick based on need other based on the 'best available player' theory. Why would the Texans or Lions want a QB? They have two young guys they believe in a lot. That takes 2 teams out of the fold-Detroit wants Rogers-that is no secret, which takes three teams out.

So now Dallas-who havent really said much may want a CB/DL/QB who knows? and they are the wildcard here. They could very well jump in and grab Leftwich right there if Chicago hasnt done it it prior.

I just dont buy the dropping out of the top 5 arguement at all. I think he will most likely be gone at #6, but if not the Cards need to draft him with taking zero second off the clock!
