BOSTON — The Bruins season is over, but they’ll have to scoreboard-watch before knowing their pre-lottery draft position.
Boston could have sewn up the No. 4 spot with a regulation loss, but the overtime loss allowed Philadelphia, which lost to at least temporarily move into the No. 4 spot.
Both the Bruins and Flyers have 76 points. If they stay tied Boston would be fifth and Philly fourth because the Bruins have more regulation wins.
Philadelphia is at Buffalo on Thursday.
Losing in overtime did guarantee Boston no worse than fifth now. Seattle also has 76 points, but the Kraken has more regulation wins than the Bruins.
That means even if two teams below Boston win the lottery, the worst they could pick is No. 7.
Here’s how the lottery, which hasn’t been scheduled yet, works:
All non-playoff teams are in the lottery.
There will be two drawings, one for the No. 1 pick and one for the No. 2 pick. Once the top two picks have been determined, clubs will be slotted in reverse order of their finish in the regular season. A team can only move up 10 selections if it wins one of the lottery draws, a change announced by the NHL on March 23, 2021. Only the top 11 teams in the lottery are eligible to receive the No. 1 selection.
If a team outside of the top 11 wins the first draw, the team with the worst record would get the No. 1 pick, while the winner would move up 10 spots.
