Just a mere 2yrs ago he was almost the DC.

He knows the 3-4 just fine and if he retains that style the Cards shouldn't miss a beat.

If I were a defensive player I'd really want some stability. How many DC's have they been through in the past 6yrs??

That will be Bowles toughest job - getting everyone on board with him. And, I expect a few new faces in that are on D.
If Horton is indeed replaced by Bowles, your comments are reassuring. But here's my concern:

The hallmark of last year's 3-4 under Horton was that players could fly around with abandon without being out of position very often because everyone knew what they were doing.

It was a "take no prisoners" turnover-forcing defense, but not totally undisciplined. I'd hate for us to lose that quality.

There are 3-4's and there are 3-4's. Which one will Bowles go with? I don't recall Philly playing with the same buzzsaw energy and abandon that Horton had his defense playing.

I'm thinking he'll go with the 3-4.

As for buzzsaw energy??? Philly was a complete mess and had completely quit, by the time he took over, and loaded with primadonas...

According to ASFN, Ray Horton invented the 3-4. Unintentional comedy meter is sky high on this board right now. We will look back and laugh at all of these threads soon enough.

I hate losing Horton. I like Arians hope he does well. He seems like an honest down to earth guy that is a natural leader.

I don't know Bowels, but everything you read about him is great.

I don't think that is the case at all. It is ASFN knows he ran a very good defense, and can have the futile debate we didn't but that is just stupid, IMO.

There is no problem to say a person is not worried about losing Horton but there is no need to down play the very very obvious fact he produced a great defense while here. It actually takes away from any points being made, IMO.

There is no need to put the guy down. Just saying there is no worry in losing Horton is enough, IMO.

Plus we all know he is running LeBeau's defense. Being a supporter of Horton, if Kevin Butler came in to replace him I would feel much better.

Bowles is not a LeBeau 3-4 guy, he is from the Bill Parcell coaching tree.

Sadly that's something we're almost never able to do.

Before Horton the Cards hadn't had a decent defense more than once since 1994. He is the only DC to have the Cards finish out of the bottom 24 in both scoring and yards allowed two seasons in a row since the 1970's. And you think its laughable that some people think highly of Horton?

Like Rugby wrote it's one thing to think the Cards will be ok without Horton but quite another to attempt to belittle his accomplishments in Arizona.

Great find for a bump!

The Parcells 3-4 that we assume Bowles will run is very similar to how Horton ran his 3-4. Both were heavily predicated on getting pressure from the A gaps. It is why Parcells brought the smaller but quicker Ferguson to play his NT were ever he went.

Parcells loved this guy and this guy would be a HC today if Parcells was still playing the roll of executive.

Here is the interesting part of this possible swap, the history, path, and style of Horton and Bowles are eerily similar. Don't know if they are similar personality wise though. You can flip flop the names for each bio and most wouldn't know the difference if I didn't include their mentors names.

Horton
1. Undrafted DB to play in the NFL for 10 years.
2. One a Super Bowl as a player
3. Been coaching since 1994
4. 52 years old
5. Biggest Mentor is one of the best of all time in Dick Labeau
6. Coached mostly in a aggressive 3-4

Bowles
1. Undrafted DB to play in the NFL for 7 years.
2. One a Super Bowl as a Player
3. Been coaching since 1995
4. 49 years old
5. Biggest Mentor is one of the best of all time in Bill Parcells
6. Coached mostly in a aggressive 3-4

Wont devalue what Horton did here, but I think the opposite is true as well. Most are going to devalue Bowles before he ever gets a chance because his name isn't Horton. You can not like the loss of Horton but still like the prospects of Bowles.

Thanx Joe - fills in some major info gaps. One thing still missing, though:

Horton is known for exotic blitz packages (from all angles, different people at any time). Is that also the way Bowles runs his defense?

This makes me feel a little better about losing Ray Horton. The good thing is an improved Arians offense should take some pressure off the defense. And it's possible Bowles is here for more than ONE year.

No idea really. I mean Hortons D wasn't exactly the same as Lebeau's was. I assume Bowles would do the same, so we cant even use Parcell's 3-4 as a barometer, heck we are assuming he even sticks with a 3-4 D.

He called plays while coaching at Grambling and Morehouse but that was back in the late 90's so his style has most likely changed drastically since then.

I'm very unhappy about losing Horton. As long as I can remember his defense was exciting to watch as every player appeared to buy in. To match that intensity played last season during lose after lose was great coaching period. I hope Arians is the man. We all hope he does well.

I truly wanted Horton to be our new head coach. I don't know how he was percieved in his two interviews. Not good I assume. But, Horton with a decent OC would have been ideal IMO. We shall see

I wish Hoton the very best and I HOPE THIS MOVE DOESN'T COME BACK TO BITE US.
