After a 17-16 (7-13 Big Ten) season, Iowa head men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery was fired on Friday.

McCaffery leaves Iowa City as the Hawkeyes' all-time wins leader with a final record of 297-207 (143-141 Big Ten). In his 15 seasons at the helm, McCaffery directed Iowa to seven NCAA Tournament berths, including four straight from 2019-23.

The Hawkeyes won the 2022 Big Ten Tournament and McCaffery guided seven players to first-team All-Big Ten status and four consensus All-Americans. That group of players featured forward Jarrod Uthoff (2016), forward Luka Garza (2020, 2021), forward Keegan Murray (2022) and forward Kris Murray (2023).

Garza was recognized as the 2021 National Player of the Year as he received the Naismith Trophy after averaging 24.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game while shooting 55.3% from the field and 44.0% from 3-point range.

Take a look at how Iowa basketball fans, reporters and college hoops fans reacted to the news of McCaffery's firing on social media on Friday.

Thank you Coach for changing my life, and the lives of so many others. You believed in a way that not many others did. Choosing to play in the black and gold was the best decision I have ever made for a lot of reasons, but mainly because I was able to be coached by you. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/eMUvxb12gw

I'm happy to see most fans posting positive Fran memories. The man gave the program everything he had for 15 years.

It was time but thankful for everything he did for the program

Fran took Iowa from the ashes following a disastrous tenure and injected life into the program. He did things the right way. He found and developed a ton of underrated kids. Very few players left the program. It was clear there was amazing culture. He is leaving it in a better… https://t.co/GdiDYtkABb

I always appreciated Fran. He was a down to earth, good guy in all my interactions with him. Think he did a pretty damn good job for a long time with the resources available to him https://t.co/ts4lrYgc62

Fran drug Iowa out of the Lickliter sewer, got us back to relevance and did it while really, really touching the community. I’m grateful.

Thank you Fran McCaffery for bringing Iowa hoops back from the dead, for your leadership of countless young men, for your sons, and for your tireless support of cancer research and advocacy. Thank you for a constant stream of great memories during your tenure at Iowa. pic.twitter.com/YmZ5o3QEjI

Hell of a run for Fran. Always be thankful for him getting us out of the gutter!

He said it in Year 2 after slamming a chair at Michigan State. Fran McCaffery has never wavered from that passion. It brought plenty of success and a culture that players swore by.

All the best to Iowa’s all-time winningest coach. https://t.co/tO07oExoco
